A little something that is unknown to many folks in the US is that soccer betting is as popular in Europe as the NFL is in the States. Within Europe alone there is over 50 soccer leagues which mean that there are games going on almost every day.
Betting on soccer is actually a lot like wagering on professional baseball games or National Hockey League matches. Soccer sports betting also involves the money line–as in baseball and hockey–with the main difference being that soccer betting allows the bettor to place a bet on either team, as well as having the option to bet that the game will result in a tie.
In this instance, wagering on a tie will mean that any soccer team that you bet on will have to win the game in order for you to win the bet. Wagering on a tie in some cases is even more beneficial than actually wagering on one single team.
There are number of different types of wagering scenarios if you are betting on soccer.
Some other soccer bets include totals betting (where you bet on how many total goals will be scored in a game), prop betting (some prop bets include first goalscorer, time of first corner kick, time of last goal, and anything else you can think of really), and futures betting (such as wagering on which team will win the next World Cup). If you can think of something you would like to bet on in soccer, chances are you will be able to find a line for it.
We will also be featuring soccer betting tips, as well as a selection of best free bets available on the web that covers online casino and poker too. A special attention will be paid to bet in-play sportsbooks, as live betting is slowly taking over from conventional pre-match betting.
Online Soccer bets
The first step to betting on soccer and probably the easiest way to bet is something called a soccer money line. In soccer each game can end in three ways. The home team can win, the road team can win, or the game can end in a tie. A money line bet is simply wagering on which of these three outcomes you expect to occur in the game in question.
For example if Holland is playing Uruguay the money line may look something like this:
- Holland +141
- Uruguay +210
- Draw +249
In this example, Holland are slight favorites to win the game and a $100 wager on Holland would win $141 for a payout of $241 if they are victorious. The least expected outcome is a draw, which would result in $249 won on a $100 bet for a $349 payout. As you can see money line betting is very straight forward. You simple wager on the outcome that you think will happen against the odds of that outcome happening. Obviously the more likely outcomes will payout less than the least likely outcomes.
You can also bet on the point spread which is where the favorite team needs to win by the given amount of points. If the spread is -1.5 then the team needs to win by two points for you to win, and if you take the underdog then the team can lose by one, but no more then that.
Here is an example using the same game as above:
- Holland -0.5 +141
- Uruguay +0.5 -154
As you can see the Holland line did not change from the money line because it still requires Holland to win outright. However, the Uruguay line now includes a draw, and as such the odds have shortened significantly. In this case a $154 wager on Uruguay to cover the spread will win $100. If Uruguay wins or the game ends in a tie then a Uruguay spread wager pays out, while if Holland wins outright then the Dutch spread wager pays out.
The final bet that is common when betting on soccer is the total score. You can choose to pick over and under the given amount of goals, for example, if the soccer over/under in a particular match was 1.5 goals you as a bettor have to decide whether to vote on the over, which means that you expect at least 2 goals in the game. If at least 2 goals are scored, you placed a successful bet. If you take the under you are expecting no more than one solitary goal to be scored in the entire match.
Soccer Handicapping Tips:
A few important handicapping factors to consider before you embark on soccer betting.
Look at their recent team form. Check who was the opposition and what was the situation of the opposition at the time of the game. If available, read the recent match reports to see if the team was unlucky because of opposition goalkeeper having a great day etc.
Home and Away Records:
Check for home and away statistics. Some teams play better at home ground, some play better away. Also check if the game is a local derby and if teams share the stadium.
Check the history between the two clubs. The home and away history is important. You will be surprised how the history repeats in some games year after year.
Be sure always to check for injuries and suspensions. Which players are missing and how important are they. If there are injuries check if it is long-time injuries or new injuries since the last game etc. How good are the players who will play instead.
Motivation is very important, especially when the season end is near. Ask yourself if the team needs points. Is the team playing European football and maybe will rest players. Is the team interested in the domestic cup.
Check the team schedule. How many games have they played in recent days. Could they be tired. When are they playing again. Is the next game very important to the team.
