The 149 Belmont Stakes is restricted to only 16 Belmont Stakes runners and will run on Saturday, June 10, 2017, for the third and final leg of the Triple Crown.
Here is the latest look at Senior Investment, one of the contenders for the 2017 Belmont Stakes to be run at Belmont Park.
Owner: Fern Circle Stables
Trainer: Kenneth McPeek
Pedigree: Discreetly Mine – Plaid, by Deputy Commander
Last Race Result: 3rd Place, Preakness Stakes, 5/20/17
Senior Investment isn't going to sneak up on anyone in the Belmont Stakes like he did at the Preakness Stakes. He was largely a non-factor for betting purposes in the second leg of the Triple Crown, lined at 32 to 1. Yet after finishing third at the Preakness, no one is going to confuse this for one of the worst horses in the field at the Belmont.
Still, Senior Investment has a long way to go to ultimately challenge for a jewel of the Triple Crown. He's a +800 choice at the moment. That's probably an overhyped number, but it's hard to say that Senior Investment has accomplished less in his career than most of these other three-year olds.
The resume here still isn't great. Finishing third at the Preakness isn't the end all, be all. There were only probably four or five serious thoroughbreds in that race, and Always Dreaming was clearly shot by the time the colts hit the far turn. A couple allowance victories and a win in the Lexington Stakes as an 11 to 1 longshot doesn't do much for us either, especially not for a horse who needed four races and four different jockeys to crack his maiden.
But we can't help but wonder if Senior Investment is ready for a big run at the Belmont anyway. The Belmont Stakes is often a race that works for those ponies who started their careers running at longer distances. Not only did this horse start off at a mile at Ellis Park, but he also started on the grass instead of on dirt. That's generally a sign of a pony who is more set to run these longer distances as will be the case at the Belmont Stakes.
Senior Investment keeps running in longer and longer races, and his results are getting better and better, at least on the Beyer Speed Ratings. His career-best was his 98 at the Preakness Stakes, and we can't help but wonder if he had another 3/16 of a mile to work with as he will at the Belmont if he could have run down Classic Empire and Cloud Computing. It's an interesting hypothesis to make for a deep closer in a field full of a lot of pace, and that will surely make Senior Investment a pony who sharps are looking into.
We don't really trust Channing Hill on top of this colt, but he did do a fine job riding him at the Preakness. With the same run at the Belmont, the results could be even better.
No one will mistake Senior Investment for a top three-year old or a Breeders' Cup contender. But could he factor into the decision at the Belmont Stakes just due to the nature of the long race? We could see it. We'll be putting Senior Investment in our exotics for sure.
With a maximum of 16 horses accepted into the Belmont Stakes field, there is a significant vetting process to qualify the horses among this group of three-year olds. Horses which finished in the top four at either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes are guaranteed entry into the Belmont Stakes, while the other starters are placed in the field based on earnings in graded stakes races and non-restricted sweepstakes races.
Belmont Stakes post positions and morning line odds for all horses in the field, will be updated until the day of the race.
