The 149 Belmont Stakes is restricted to only 16 Belmont Stakes runners and will run on Saturday, June 10, 2017, for the third and final leg of the Triple Crown.
Here is the latest look at Multiplier, one of the contenders for the 2017 Belmont Stakes to be run at Belmont Park.
Owner: Wacthel Stable, George Kerr and Gary Barber
Trainer: Brendan Walsh
Pedigree: The Factor – Trippi Street, by Trippi
Last Race Result: 6th Place, Preakness Stakes, 5/20/17
Multiplier was probably better bet upon than most would have figured at the Preakness Stakes. He was always considered to be one of the longshots to win the race, and as it stood, he was a 20 to 1 longshot and finished sixth. It was the longest price of Multiplier's career, though that mark may or may not stand when the Belmont is said and done with.
Early indications suggest that Multiplier is going to be one of the longest shots on the board at the Belmont. He's set at +2000 at the moment and might not end up in any better shape than that. There's a chance he's the biggest longshot in the race by the time it goes off, though we should note that there are thoroughbreds we think are worse in this field.
Multiplier's crowning moment was winning the Illinois Derby back in April at Hawthorne. He posted a 104 Beyer Speed Rating that day and overcame a relatively long price of 9 to 2 against a field of just six others. It was his second straight win and gave birth to the thought that perhaps he was a late-bloomer in life. Instead, he came crashing back to earth at the Preakness Stakes having gotten a poor run from jockey Joel Rosario.
That said, the 97 Beyer Speed Rating at the Preakness wasn't a disqualifier. It wasn't a bad race by Multiplier, just one in which he was poor relative to the rest of the field. We'll see whether he has the horses in a longer race to perhaps have some extra ground to make up in the end.
The 1 1/2-mile nature of the Belmont Stakes could play into Multiplier's hands. Typically, the deeper closers have a better shot of at least coming back from the dead in the last quarter mile in this race. The big problem remains: He's not as good of a horse as Lookin At Lee, another of the deep closers in the field. But you flat out never know when a pony is going to have this distance in him and when he won't. In the case of Multiplier, you'd be betting on a poor man's Lookin At Lee. The good news about betting on a poor man's version of anything? You're going to get a lot better price on the "poor man" than you will "the man."
Thus, in the end, the decision about Multiplier is really going to come down to price and risk tolerance. There's no such thing as a sure bet in the "Test of Champions," and every horse is able to be bet upon at the right place. There's probably a 1-in-20 chance that Multiplier wins the Belmont Stakes. That said, if you're going to bet on him, you'll have to realize that there's a 19-in-20 chance that he won't. He could just as easily finish 50 lengths off the pace and never have the kick in him to cover the extra distance, and we just won't know that until June 10.
With a maximum of 16 horses accepted into the Belmont Stakes field, there is a significant vetting process to qualify the horses among this group of three-year olds. Horses which finished in the top four at either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes are guaranteed entry into the Belmont Stakes, while the other starters are placed in the field based on earnings in graded stakes races and non-restricted sweepstakes races.
Belmont Stakes post positions and morning line odds for all horses in the field, will be updated until the day of the race.
