Sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott's 4 TDs lift Ohio State to inaugural CFP title over Oregon.
The underdog in all three of their postseason games, the Buckeyes rode a record-breaking performance from sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott to a 42-20 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at AT&T Stadium.
After losing their first and second-string quarterbacks to injury right before the regular season and postseason, respectively, the Buckeyes entered the postseason as the ultimate underdog, and upset Wisconsin, top-ranked Alabama, and then, Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Ducks in order to win the school's eighth national title.
In the biggest game of the season, down by four with 79 seconds left, the Heisman Trophy winner, Jameis Winston put together the drive of his life, and the Seminoles proved they could take a punch and win a championship.
Winston threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 13 seconds left and No. 1 Florida State beat No. 2 Auburn 34-31 to win the BCS national title Monday night.
The Alabama Crimson Tide football team, cruised to its second consecutive BCS championship, and third in four seasons, beating No. 1 defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 42–14 for the national championship and took home the Championship Trophy.
Alabama (13-1) became the third team to win three national titles in four seasons since polls started being used to crown champions in 1936, and the first since Nebraska from 1994-97.
The Crimson Tide marched with ease on the opening drive, going 82 yards on five plays to take a 7-0 lead on Lacy's 20-yard touchdown run up the middle with 12:03 left in the first quarter.
Notre Dame (12-0) had allowed only two rushing touchdowns in its surprising run to the championship game. The Fighting Irish were the first team to reach the BCS championship game after starting the season unranked. They were trying to become the first team to go from unranked to national champion since BYU in 1984.
Alabama quickly made the Fighting Irish look as if they were in over their heads.
The BCS National Championship game was played at the Allstate Sugar Bowl last year, and they could have called it ALL Alabama Sugar the way that game went. This Alabama Crimson Tide defense was smothering, dominating and stellar in a rematch with the LSU Tigers from their regular season OT loss 9-6. They did not give the Tigers anything, and that had to hurt with a 21-0 loss.
LSU was held to 92 yards in total offense and the distinction of being the only team in the fourteen year history of the BCS to be shutout. QB Jordan Jefferson of LSU had a much worse game than their regular season contest where he had 203 total yards of offense and no turnovers compared to 92 yards and two turnovers.
AJ McCarron threw for 234 yards and gained 96 more running the ball on his way to claiming the offensive MVP award. The only TD was by Trent Richardson with 4:36 remaining.
The Auburn Tigers from the Southeastern Conference faced the Oregon Ducks of the Pacific-10 Conference for the National Championship.
Glendale, Arizona played host the 2011 Tostitos BCS National Championship game, as the Oregon Ducks faced off with the Auburn Tigers in the University of Phoenix Stadium, the home field of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
In the end, the SEC champion Auburn Tigers had won their second national championship and garnered for the SouthEast Conference their fifth straight BCS national title.
A 19-yard field goal by Wes Byrum, as time expired, won the game for the Tigers, with the final score 22-19.
January 8, 2009 Florida Gators 24, Oklahoma Sooners 14
As Florida quarterback Tim Tebow ran off the field near the end of the third quarter against Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series title game Thursday night, the right shoulder of his white jersey was tattooed with many grass stains. He looked more like himself as he motioned to his sideline with arm pumps and primal screams.
Finally, the Gators offense had come to life. Soon, Florida took hold of the game in the same way safety Ahmad Black grabbed the ball from Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias on the key defensive play of the game in the fourth quarter.
The Gators seized the moment and thus the national championship, beating Oklahoma 24-14 in front of an orange and blue dominated crowd of 78,468 at Dolphin Stadium. It is Florida's second national title in three years and third in school history.
January 7, 2008 LSU 38, Ohio State 24
LSU won its second BCS championship game in four years with a convincing 38-24 dispatch of Ohio State at the Superdome. LSU just won the school's second national championship in five years, 38-24 over those same Ohio State Punchlines.
End of split national championship discussion. For the first time in 47 years a team with two regular-season losses won it all. In a season that was a chase to see who could be the best of the mediocre, LSU was the last comic standing.
The joke, back on Nov. 23, was that the Tigers had a chance in hell of being here. Now there is no doubt, despite the season ending with eight other BCS conference teams having two losses. This time the final score was healthy-and-loaded LSU 38, in-over-its-head Ohio State 24. And it wasn't that close. Once again, the Bucks got their fans excited by scoring early -- ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown last season, jumped out 10-0 this time.
Buckeyes weren't ready for what LSU threw at them. Not ready to win the battle in the trenches, not ready to match speed on the perimeter, not ready to calmly and smartly execute under a mountain of pressure.
Combine that lack of toughening with vivid memories of the destruction in the desert against Florida and you know why so many of us were concerned about Ohio State's fitness for this battle. Especially if you saw a fully loaded LSU from earlier in the season, before the SEC wars began wearing it down.
January 8, 2007 Florida 41, Ohio State 14
The Florida Gators ran away with college football's national championship. When they defeated Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and No. 1 Ohio State on Monday night with a easy victory over the buckeyes, 41-14.
Florida's amazingly easy victory left the Gators and the Buckeyes with identical 13-1 records and, with Wisconsin and Louisville also losing just once, almost surely will renew calls for a playoff system.
