Men’s U.S. Open Preview
The U.S. Open should be all about Roger Federer, as he looks to win his sixth U.S. Open title. His path is much easier than it could have been with Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka out of action. Most people believe that this tournament will come down to Federer and Rafael Nadal, but unfortunately because Murray pulled out late, Federer and Nadal will meet in the semifinals and not the final, if they meet at all. Keep in mind that Federer and Nadal have never played in the U.S. Open.
Federer shouldn’t have too much difficulty doing his part in reaching the semifinals, but Nadal may not make it. Nadal is having a very good season but most of his success came on clay and on grass. He has struggled a bit on hardcourts this season. The draw definitely helps Nadal but I could definitely see him losing in the quarterfinals to Grigor Dimitrov.
The player who could upset the apple cart and beat one of the top two is Alexander Zverev who has already beaten Federer and Djokovic to win titles this season. Zverev might end up going against Marin Cilic who won this tournament in 2014. Zverev is getting a lot of respect from the oddsmakers, as the third choice in the betting at +565.
Women’s U.S. Open Preview
The women’s side is wide open, with Muguruza a lukewarm favorite. She won Wimbledon and she is coming off a win in the U.S. Open prep in Cincinnati. The draw for Muguruza is pretty good, as the first seeded player she could face is Magdelena Rybarikova. Muguruza might have a tough match against Petra Kvitova in the fourth round and then a potential meeting against Caroline Wozniacki in the quarters. The interesting matchup for Muguruza in this bracket could come against Venus Williams, who could move up to No. 1 in the world by winning the title in New York and having a number of other things happen.
Karolina Pliskova is the second choice in the betting and she lost in the U.S. Open Final a year ago to Angelique Kerber. Pliskova looks to have an easy path to the quarterfinals, as the other seeded players in her part of the draw are Shuai Zhang, Barbora Strycova, Kiki Mladenovic, Agnieszkaa Radwanska, Coco Vandewehge, Anett Kontaveitand Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Other players to consider are Simona Halep who has the misfortune of facing Maria Sharapova in the first round, as Sharapova was granted wildcard for this event. Halep does have a tough draw, as she also has Johanna Konta, Julia Goerges and Sloane Stephens in her bracket. Halep was also destroyed by Muguruza in Cincinnati, losing 6-1, 6-0, so it is hard to have a ton of confidence in Halep winning the final, if she gets that far.

It is all about Federer on the men’s side, as his only real threat appears to be Zverev and I don’t think Zverev is quite ready to win yet on the big stage in New York. The women’s side is really wide open and you can make a case for any number of players. I will go with Muguruza, but I am not thrilled at the low odds on her at top 5 online sportsbooks. If you want a couple of longshots, I would look at Dimitrov at odds of +1405 and Kuznetsova at odds of +2558.
