Federated Auto Parts 400 Predictions

Auto Racing Futures

The last race before the NASCAR Playoffs begin is Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 on NBCSN. The field is pretty well in place for the playoffs unless one of the drivers outside the top 16 in points gets the win. The focus will be on drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano, Erik Jones and Clint Bowyer who can only make the Playoffs by winning this race. Let’s look at Saturday night’s race at Richmond and NASCAR predictions.

Top Contenders

In the April race at Richmond it was Logano winning but his points were taken away because his car failed a post-race inspection. His Penske teammate Brad Keselowski finished second. I don’t know that either driver is the best choice to win on Saturday night. The race is going to be wild because drivers have nothing to lose. Those already in on points can just go for the win and those outside of the Top 16 will take a lot of chances. The spotlight will be on Dale Earnhardt Jr. who has to win to make the Playoffs in his final season. Jr. has won three times at Richmond and I think he has value at big odds. Bowyer is a two-time winner at Richmond and I think he might get into contention. There is no doubt that drivers like Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson could be in the mix for the win but I think Saturday night is the time to take a longshot.

Race Notes

Denny Hamlin leads all active drivers in wins in this race with three. Ther have been 122 previous Cup races at Richmond with the pole sitter winning 23 times, the last of which was Hamlin last year. Starting up front is very important, as the race winner has started from a top ten spot 79% of the time.

NASCAR Predictions

I had Hamlin as one of my top two choices last week and he came through with a win. He could win again on Saturday but as I said earlier, I think this is the week to take a couple of longshots. Logano needs to win on Saturday and he has finished in the top 10 in seven straight at Richmond including a win in April. I will take Logano at odds of +2000. I also have to take a shot with Jr. at odds of +7500.
