Gunnevera will be racing at Saratoga for the first time since finishing second in last year’s Travers Stakes. The horse is coming off an impressive win last time out although it was against claimers at Gulfstream. This will be the third race for Gunnevera this year, as he finished third in the Pegasus World Cup.
Seeking the Soul won at Saratoga last summer so he does have experience on the main track. He finished fifth in the Pegasus World Cup and then ran second in the Michael G. Schaefer Memorial at Indiana Grand.
Tapwrit was supposed to be a superstar horse, but he has frustrated his connections. "Last year he was no talk and all action. This year he's been all talk and relatively no action," said Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. “We've not lost faith in him, but there is no doubt about it—all that matters is what happens out there on the playing field." The horse won the 2017 Belmont Stakes but has not won since. The horse is coming off a fourth in the Whitney Stakes in early August. Trainer Todd Pletcher said it is time for the horse to deliver. “He’s training where we wanted him to be, now we need him to step up and run the race he’s capable of.”
Yoshida has been a very good horse on turf, but we really don’t know what to expect on dirt, as the horse is trying dirt for the first time. If he takes to the dirt he is the best horse in this race.
Sunny Ridge has hit the board against top horses in his career. He is coming off a win last time out at Belmont Park in the State Dinner Stakes.
Pletcher has two longshots who might have a better chance than Tapwrit. Rally Cry and Patch are listed at big odds. Rally Cry comes off a third-place finish to Kurilov and Realm in the Alydar Stakes Aug. 5. "He trains exceptionally well. He's always been an impressive horse to watch train," Pletcher said to the media. “If he runs his 'A' race, we feel like he's capable." Pletcher also gives Patch a shot at this distance. "I think the mile and an eighth suits him well, and hopefully he's the type of horse who can benefit from a solid pace as well.”
Woodward Stakes Predictions
There are obviously a number of horses who could win this race. I don’t think there is a ton of value on either of the two possible favorites, Gunnevera and Seeking the Soul. I think there could be some value in taking Yoshida at odds of 5-1. If the horse takes to the dirt he could be long gone and win wire-to-wire. Tapwrit is the wild card, as he is capable of winning this race if he finally shows up to run. For a longshot, I will go with Rally Cry on the outside, as he has the combination of Smith and Pletcher.
The Woodward Stakes has a post time of 6:47 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday on NBCSN.
