Delta Prince has won four of his nine career starts and has finished in the money in all nine of his races. He is coming off a close loss to Voodoo Song at Saratoga. The horse did win at the track in the King Edward in June. This will be the third start for the horse this year. There is no reason to think Delta Prince won’t be right there for the win on Saturday.
There are a lot of horses that could contend. Oscar Performance has won 7 of his 13 career starts and it is usually all or nothing for this horse, as he has 7 wins and only one other finish in the money. He was pulled up in the Arlington Million but is said to be training well. He has won both of his previous starts at a mile. If you take this horse you definitely bet him to win instead of to place or show.
Lord Glitters will be making his first start in North America. He has won six of his 17 starts. He did win a Group 3 race at York last time out. Trainer David O’Meara did win this race in 2015, so Lord Glitters should not be ignored.
If you want a horse that knows this track then your choice is Mr Havercamp. He has won six of his nine career starts and four are at Woodbine. He has won twice at this distance and he gets the leading jockey at Woodbine. The question is whether he can take the step up in class.
Divisidero has won six of his 20 starts. He finished third in the Fourstardave behind Delta Prince. He has never won a race at a mile, so he may be overvalued at single-digit odds.
Stormy Antarctic has won six of his 22 races. He has been competing in Group level races in England, France, and Germany. He does have five wins at this distance.
My longshot is Good Samaritan who has been running really well on the dirt for Bill Mott. He has faced tough competition and had success. He won the Jim Dandy last year and he won the New Orleans Handicap in March.
Woodbine Mile Predictions
I can’t find any reason to go against Delta Prince in this race other than the price. This is a good field and I am not thrilled about odds of 5-2, but Delta Prince should win this race. I can’t totally discount Oscar Performance, as he was the favorite in the Arlington Million and then was pulled up. If Oscar Performance is ready to roll, and all indications are that he is, he should be right there. I think an exacta box of Delta Prince and Oscar Performance is the way to go in this race. If you want to throw a couple of longshots into a trifecta box then I would go with Good Samaritan and La Sardane.
The Woodbine Mile takes place on Saturday, September 15 at Woodbine Racetrack with a start time of 4:48 p.m. Eastern.
