The Jim Dandy Stakes is a Grade 2 race run at a mile and a eighth for a purse of $600,000 at Saratoga. The race is considered a prep for the $1.25 million dollar Travers on August 25.
The marquee names in Saturday’s race are Tenfold and Vino Rosso. Tenfold is a Steve Asmussen trained horse by Curlin. He won his first two races at Oaklawn Park and he just missed winning the Preakness, finishing third. He had a rough time in the Belmont and finished fifth. Tenfold has been training at Saratoga and should be in the mix for the win on Saturday.
“The Belmont was won by a Triple Crown winner,” Asmussen said to the media, “Tenfold was fifth without the trip you were hoping for. For me to expect to win a classic without a dream trip was very unrealistic.”Asmussen said that Tenfold is training well. “He’s fast right now,” Asmussen said. “It’s a good time to be fast. I thought he did it very easily. I feel good about him going into the Jim Dandy.”
Vino Rosso won the Wood Memorial but was a disappointing ninth in the Kentucky Derby. He was the third choice in the betting in the Belmont Stakes but finished fourth
Flameaway looked good early with a win in the Sam F. Davis and second place finishes in the Blue Grass and Tampa Bay Derby but he was just 13th in the Kentucky Derby and he ran a poor sixth in the Ohio Derby in his last race.
Sporting Chance won his first race at Saratoga last year but he has not won since in five starts. His last race was a sixth place finish in the Preakness.
Reride is coming off a fifth place finish in the Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park. The horse does have a couple of smaller stakes wins this season and he could be a contender at attractive odds.
The Jim Dandy Stakes has seen a few horses go on to have success in the Breeders’ Cup. Louis Quatorze won this race in 1196 and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic the next year. Awesome Again won this race in 1997 and won the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Will Take Charge finished second in the Jim Dandy five years ago and then won the Travers Stakes and was second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Jim Dandy Stakes Picks
I think Tenfold is the clear choice to win this race on Saturday. He has looked really good in training and Asmussen is very confident. Sometimes you have to take what a trainer said with a grain of salt, but Tenfold looks to be the class of this race. If you are looking for a horse to throw in some exotic wagers then I would probably go with ReRide. I know that Vino Rosso has the higher profile, but his odds are going to be low and I am not sure what to expect, Sporting Chance is unpredictable and I want no part of Flameaway. At least Reride should have some decent odds and Asmussen felt good enough about the horse to enter him in this race instead of one on Friday.
