TVG Pacific Classic Odds and Predictions

 Del Mar Racetrack Picks

One of the bigger races of the summer is the TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar. This year’s race will have a field of eight with Accelerate listed as the 8-5 morning line favorite. The horse drew post position No. 5 for the 28th running of the $1-million dollar TVG Pacific Classic that awards the winner an automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November. There are a number of horses who could give Accelerate a challenge on Saturday, as five other horses are listed at odds of 8-1 or less. Let’s look at Saturday’s TVG Pacific Classic and horse racing predictions.

PP Horse Jockey Trainer Odds
1 The Lieutenant Drayden Van Dyke Mike McCarthy

2 Dr. Dorr Joe Talamo Bob Baffert 6-1
3 Prime Attraction Kent Desormeaux James Cassidy 8-1
4 Roman Rosso Flavien Prat Bob Baffert 5-1
5 Accelerate Joel Rosario John Sadler 8-5
6 Beach View Rafael Bejarano Leonard Powell 15-1
7 Pavel Mario Gutierrez Doug O’Neill 7-2
8 Two Thirty-Five Franklin Ceballos Richard Baltas 20-1

The clear choice favorite to win Saturday’s race that is Accelerate, considered the top older horse in the country. The 5-year old horse comes into the race with three wins and a second in four races this year. He is looking to become only the third horse ever to sweep the “Big Three” California races for older horses – TVG Pacific Classic, the Santa Anita Handicap and the Gold Cup.

Accelerate is trained by John Sadler but he will have a new jockey, as his regular rider Victor Espinoza is injured. Joel Rosario will get the call on Saturday. Rosario won this race in 2012 with Dullahan. Accelerate finished third in this race a year ago behind Collected and Arrogate.

Other Contenders

The second choice on the morning line is Pavel at odds of 7-2. The horse looked great last time out in winning the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs, but he isn’t as good as Accelerate.

Roman Rosso is the wildcard in this race, as the horse has been facing horses in Argentina. He will be making his first start for Bob Baffert and he does get leading rider Flavien Prat in the irons.

Dr. Dorr is another Baffert horse who has three wins in six starts this year. He is finally healthy and he could get into the mix in this race.

The Lieutenant started the season slow but has been getting better. He got his first stakes win at Golden Gate in the Grade 3 All American. He finished an impressive second behind Diversify last time out in the Suburban at Belmont Park.

Prime Attraction was third last time out in the Eddie Read Stakes. He is unbeaten on the Del Mar dirt, so he is not without a chance in this race.

It is hard to get too excited about Beach View or Two Thirty Five but at least Beach View did win in his Del Mar debut last time out.

TVG Pacific Classic Predictions

There is no reason not to like Accelerate on Saturday other than the low morning line odds of 8-5. The horse has done nothing wrong this year and is a deserving favorite. I like Accelerate as my top choice but because of the low odds, I will also look at some exotic wagers. I think The Lieutenant has a chance to get away quickly in this race and he may be able to hang on to get into the money. I also can’t ignore Roman Rosso. The horse is getting a ton of respect from the oddsmakers, as he is listed at odds of 5-1. All we really know is that he was beating horses in Argentina. Baffert sure likes the horse and reports are that the horse has been training well leading up to this race. I think an exacta box of Accelerate, The Lieutenant and Roman Rosso is also worth a play in Saturday’s race and those three horses could be combined in a trifecta box.
