Good Magic is last year’s 2-year old champion and he has been very impressive this year including a win in the Haskell Invitational last month. There are a couple of concerns, however. The last Haskell winner to come back and win the Travers was Point Given in 2001. The distance is also concerning for Good Magic, as the horse may not like the added furlong.
The second choice in the betting is Gronkowski who finished second in the Belmont. The horse is partly owned by New England Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowsi. There should be no question about the distance for this horse, but he might be overvalued at odds of 4-1.
I want no part of Wonder Gadot, as she has done most of her winning against Canadian horses and now is facing a tough field. No filly has won this race in more than 100 years. Wonder Gadot couldn’t beat Monomoy Girl in the Kentucky Oaks and this field is much better than that one.
I give Catholic Boy a shot from the outside. The horse is said to be in great form and is proven at this distance.
Tenfold finished ahead of Good Magic in the Preakness, so he definitely could contend in this race.
Vino Rosso is trained by Todd Pletcher who has been pointing the horse to this race. Pletcher skipped the Haskell for this horse to run at Saratoga. We’ll see on Saturday if Pletcher was right.
Bravazofinished second in the Preakness and second in the Haskell, so he could be a part of the picture on Saturday. He is the son of Awesome Again so he should like the distance. If you are going to back a longshot, this horse is the one. Mendelssohn has done nothing in this country and looks overvalued even at double-digit odds and there is not much to like about Meistermind and King Zachary.
Travers Stakes Predictions
Last week’s top race was dominated by Accelerate who won easily as the favorite in the Pacific Classic. I don’t think this race on Saturday will be an easy one for Good Magic who is the 2-1 morning line favorite. The field for the Travers is solid and there are a number of horses who could win. Good Magic is a nice horse, but I am not taking him at odds of 2-1. Gronkowski could win, but I still think he is overvalued at odds of 4-1. I think there is more value on two of the longshots. I like Catholic Boy who is on the outside at odds of 8-1 and I think Bravazo could get up late and steal this race at odds of 12-1. An exacta or trifecta with those two horses leading the way is also worth a look.
The Travers Stakes has a post time of 5:44 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday. It will be part of an NBC broadcast that runs 4-6 p.m.
