Of course, we must start by talking about Nyquist when we're mentioning the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. He's the only undefeated horse in this field, and he's been challenged by many of the best contenders at some point or another along the way.
Nyquist is the only colt to beat Mohaymen thus far in his career, and that explains why these two are largely looked upon as the 1 and 1A for bettors. If they were coupled together in a hypothetical bet, they'd be around 2 to 1 against the rest of the field.
As it is, Nyquist is set at +400, while Mohaymen has dipped to +715 to win the Run for the Roses. Both horses have been working out incredibly well, and as long as they don't have horrifying draws to the far inside or far outside, they should be the favorite and second favorite respectively as they were at the Florida Derby when they ran up against each other for the very first time.
Still, these aren't the only two favorites picking up steam as we get closer to Derby Day.
The horse which is really notable is Exaggerator. He's gone from the fifth choice on the board to the second choice in a hurry, even in front of Mohaymen, and that's a real testament to the massive race he ran at the Santa Anita Derby.
Exaggerator is a big time trailer in a field of horses who would love to run a similar style, but most believe he's better at it than any of the other colts. If he's got the distance in him and the other favorites don't turn out to be much, Exaggerator will have his chance to swoop out of nowhere and claim this win.
Obviously, many out there agree. Two weeks ago, Exaggerator was over 11 to 1 to win the Derby. Now, he's just a tick over 7 to 1.
The third colt we're going to keep an eye on is Mor Spirit. It's notable that Mor Spirit has never finished worse than second in a race in his career, but bettors will point to the fact that he's risen to a double-digit choice at +1086 as a sign that perhaps he doesn't have the chops to pull this one out.
Prime Power doesn't often lie, though. When it ranks horses far off from where the oddsmakers have put them, we tend to think that it's the books that have screwed up. Prime Power rates Mor Spirit as the top colt in this field, even beyond Nyquist and Mohaymen. If nothing else, that's a reason to keep an eye on him as one of the favorites to win the Derby.
