Winning Time Under 2:30: -110
The Belmont Stakes is the eternity of all races, as it covers a whopping 1 1/2 miles, a distance which none of these three-year old colts have even thought about running in their careers. The time of the Belmont Stakes is always one of the most unpredictable factors in this race, but there are a lot of logical points that will suggest that this is going to be one of the slower races in the history of the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Fatigue is clearly going to be in play here for California Chrome. He has never raced before in a five-week stretch, let alone running three times in that span with the third of which being the Belmont Stakes. It's a grueling run for sure, and it's why there hasn't been a pony win the Triple Crown in nearly four decades.
The history of the horse racing betting lines in this race suggest that this is going to end up being a slower pace. Last year in a race in which not all that many tried to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown, Palace Malice finished up in 2:30.70. It was the fourth straight year that the 2:30 mark was surpassed.
Union Rags in 2012 was the quickest of those four, finishing in 2:30.40 and winning by a neck. The other times of late were 2:30.90 by Ruler on Ice in 2011 and 2:31.60 by Drosselmeyer in 2010.
The last horse to beat the mark of 2:30 was in 2009 when Kent Desormeaux and Summer Bird stormed around the track at Belmont Park in 2:27.50, easily the quickest time of the last decade. That day, Summer Bird was a massive underdog on the horse racing gambling lines, and that could set the stage for someone to upset California Chrome as well.
The Preakness Stakes was run in quite quick fashion by California Chrome, and Ride On Curlin proved as well that he could run at that pace to boot. That said, both of these horses have now gone through all three legs of the Triple Crown, and that doesn't bode well for this distance. California Chrome was significantly slower at the Kentucky Derby when he was ridden out to victory, and we have a feeling that that extra distance is what did him in.
As a result, to beat the horse racing wagering lines, go with the 'over' of 2:30, and don't be shocked if this is one of the slower Belmont Stakes in the race's history, even if a Triple Crown is ultimately won.
