Horse Racing Lines - Will California Chrome Beat Secretariat's Belmont Stakes Time

Belmont Stakes 2014 Predictions Picks

There seem to be no challengers for California Chrome on the horse racing lines at the Belmont Stakes. This race goes off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 7th at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY.

Check out the chances all of these horses have of taking down the ultimate record in this race, which will be seen live on NBC.

California Chrome Over 2:24: -5000

California Chrome Under 2:24: +2000

There are always some odd props out there for all of the biggest sporting events in the world, and the horse racing betting lines at the Belmont Stakes are no exception. All eyes are going to be on California Chrome, the colt going for the first Triple Crown in nearly four decades. He has been as dominating of a three-year old as there has been in quite some time, and there are a lot of comparisons being drawn between he and one of the few who have ever won the trifecta of the Sport of Kings, Secretariat.

Who could forget seeing the old black and white videos of the colt they called Big Red romping right past Sham and the rest of the field at Belmont Park? Secretariat turned the 1 1/2 miles in 2:24 flat, the fastest time ever recorded for a 1 1/2 mile race. It's fun to think that California Chrome could possibly end up beating that time, but when we place our bets on the horse racing gambling lines, we have to be realistic. There hasn't been another colt run anywhere near as well over a mile and a half in the history of horse racing, and we can't imagine that California Chrome, for as good as he has been, is going to come anywhere near challenging that time.

To put this in its proper perspective, the last three colts who won the Belmont Stakes did so in more than 2:30. Anything below 2:30 is considered a good time, and anything faster than about 2:28 is considered ridiculously fast.

California Chrome ran one of the slowest Kentucky Derby times on a fast track in the history of the race, but at the Preakness, he finished the circuit at Pimlico Race Course in 1:54.84. It was a blazing fast time, but it wasn't nearly as quick as the 1:53 that Secretariat ran in 1973.

If California Chrome couldn't end up topping ( or coming anywhere near ) the number that Secretariat put up at the Preakness Stakes, there's nothing that makes us think that he can be the exception to the rule to beat him at the Belmont Stakes either. It's an incredibly chalky play, and the argument could be there that this isn't even worth the wager, but of the two sides, it is definitely the right play on the horse racing wagering lines. There's just no way that California Chrome will run the Belmont in less than 2:24.

Belmont Stakes Prediction: California Chrome Over 2:24 ( -5000 )
