Speed almost always pays off in the Preakness Stakes. Last year, American Pharoah won the second leg of the Triple Crown wire-to-wire, and Orb did the same thing a few years ago as a relatively big longshot. We've seen really big underdogs like First Dude race out to the lead and hold on to hit the board to salvage otherwise suspect exotic numbers, too.
That's why the discussion here in the Preakness Stakes has to start with #3 Nyquist. He may or may not start on the lead, but you can bet in the third post that Mario Gutierrez isn't going to have him far off of it if he's not. Nyquist really had a relatively easy jaunt at the Derby all things considered, the field is significantly weaker here. His biggest concern is going to be getting caught at the wire by either #5 Exaggerator or possibly #1 Cherry Wine, but aside from that, we don't see another horse in this field which can beat him as long as he runs a good, clean race.
The big problem all of the speed is going to have in this race is that, unlike in the Kentucky Derby where many of the horses were stalkers or trailers by nature, we've got a ton of early speed colts. #8 Laoban is the biggest threat to kick out to the lead at all costs, and all four of him, #4 Awesome Speed, #9 Abiding Star and #2 Uncle Lino are going to try to do the exact same thing.
None of these four colts have much of a pedigree backing them against a horse like Nyquist (let alone a closer like Exaggerator), and though it's entirely possible that one could start off in the lead and hold on to place or show, good luck trying to figure out which one of the four will do just that.
The potential is there for this to really not be a great betting race. If Nyquist ultimately wins and Exaggerator finishes second as we suspect might be the case, the exacta will pay less than $10, and the trifecta is very likely to pay under $50; it's hardly worth our while.
That said, if we're looking for the winning triple, we suggest boxing 1-3-5-8. Maybe Laoban's speed or Cherry Wine's closing ability can sneak onto the board in third, but either way, this is Nyquist's day to shine.
