It goes without saying that the horse with the best shot of taking down Nyquist is Exaggerator ( + 375 ). We like the price here on the second-best horse in this field, knowing that he's got a lot more going for him here at the Preakness than he had at the Derby.
For starters, there are going to be at least six fewer horses in this field to get around. Exaggerator had a clean start at the Derby, but his navigation of traffic clearly took too long for him to get up to Nyquist in the final few strides. He'll have to make his move earlier in this one, but he'll have the ability to get the job done without a million closers trying to do the same thing he is.
There are also a lot more fast-starting horses in this field to push Nyquist out of the blocks than there were in the Derby.
That's why Cherry Wine ( + 2200 ) is also a horse to watch out for. He's another big closer who has gotten a lot of traction in recent days coming down from a high price of + 3200 to 22 to 1 where he currently sits as of the publication of this article.
Cherry Wine has fantastic breeding, and though he hasn't performed up to that at the Blue Grass Stakes and the Rebel Stakes in the past, we do think he has what it takes to contend here at the Preakness Stakes, especially with a few extra weeks of preparation.
Cherry Wine has run against big fields in the past, and he hasn't done quite enough to get up for the win. We know he has it in him though, and he could present the most value of them all at the Derby.
If you've got to pick one of the big starters to contend with Nyquist though, it's Collected ( + 1500 ). Horses that peak late in their careers are always interesting to us, and Collected fits that billing. He's ranked sixth in this field per Prime Power, and that's a good indication that he could end up contending.
Collected won the Lexington Stakes and a non-graded stakes race at Sunland Park in his last two, and you know if trainer Bob Baffert is bringing him to Pimlico, he's doing so under the knowledge that he can win this race. Collected is a starter by nature, and he's going to have to go out with Laoban, Nyquist and others at the start, but if he gets a good run and the fractions are sensible, unlike at the Kentucky Derby where they were incredibly fast, Collected could have enough to fend off the field in a wire-to-wire victory.Preakness Stakes odds at BookMaker.eu
