Considering the fact that more 30 to 1 horses have ultimately won the Belmont Stakes in the last 40 years than favorites, we know we're going to searching for the ponies who have some really long odds on their heads who could have an impact.
Lani ( +2000 ) hasn't run well in either of the first two Triple Crown races, but by all accounts, he's been settling down now that he's been in the United States for a couple months. His breeding suggests that he should have the distance in him to finish the Belmont Stakes with ease, and though he's in a field chock full of deep closers, he might quietly be the strongest of the bunch in the last eighth of a mile or so when these horses are really stretched out.
The fact of the matter is that it's the price on Lani which really has us sold. If he was only 10 to 1, we wouldn't be thinking twice about the Japanese horse. When you think of Lani, think of Palace Malice from a handful of years ago. That year, Palace Malice was nowhere to be found either in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes, but he came back and pulled off a big upset in the Belmont. This could be the same situation.
The other horses we're going to go with are ones who weren't even on the Triple Crown trail until recent days.
Wild About Deb ( + 2500 ) ran a disappointing third in the Peter Pan Stakes, but he didn't run as bad of a race as it appeared. Unified, who won that race and will be skipping the Belmont in all likelihood, is still undefeated in his career, and with Nyquist out of the way now, he might be the most likely of the three-year olds in this crop to win the Breeders' Cup Classic this year. There's no shame in finishing behind him in the Peter Pan.
We love horses who ran well at the Peter Pan when it comes to the Belmont Stakes. That's a sign of having good fortunate on this track when all of the other ponies have had to acclimate themselves to other tracks on the Triple Crown circuit. We've seen three of the last seven Belmont Stakes winners come out of the Peter Pan Stakes, and Wild About Deb could be the next.
Lastly, the breeding on Forever d'Oro ( + 3000 ) cannot be ignored. He's got Medaglia d'Oro and Lemon Drop Kid in his breeding within two generations, and that's a lot of distance and a lot of success in there. Sure, this is a colt who has only won a maiden race before, and he's only been raced three times in his career, but this could be a sneaky entry that you don't think a lot about. Forever d'Oro broke his maiden here at Belmont, and he's been training incredibly well lately by all reports.
The downside to Forever d'Oro is that you're stuck with Seeking the Soul as well, our least favorite of the horses in this field. If you bet on Forever d'Oro offshore without the use of the racebook though, you'll be able to find a better price on him than you would if you were playing him in his coupling at the track.Belmont Stakes odds at BookMaker.eu
