Del Mar Handicap Odds and Predictions

Del Mar Handicap Betting Picks

Itsinthepost is a lukewarm favorite at odds of 7-2 to win Saturday’s Del Mar Handicap in the “Win & You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challenge race. The race awards an automatic spot into the Breeders’ Cup Turf race in November at Churchill Downs. A field of 12 horses will go a mile and 3/8th on the turf at Del Mar on Saturday. It looks to be a wide open race with 8 of the 12 horses listed at odds of 8-1 or less. Let’s look at Saturday’s Del Mar Handicap and horse racing predictions.

Top Contenders

Itsinthepost has seven graded stakes wins in the last 17 months but the horse has never won at Del Mar in 10 starts. The horse has finished second at Dal Mar three times, but trainer Jeff Mullins is still taking a shot. “I’m not convinced he really likes the course here,” Mullins said to the media this week. “I don’t think it’s conducive to his running style. The corners are too sharp, and the stretch is too short. We’ll give it a try and see what happens.”

Itsinthepostfinished second in the race last year. The horse will carry the top weight of 123 pounds on Saturday.

Trainer Phil D’Amato has three runners in race led by Kenjisstorm who should set the pace from the rail. The horse will race at a mile and 3/8th for the first time. “I think he’ll be on or near the lead,” trainer Philip D’Amato said to the media. “He can go with a high cruising speed and can gallop around there.”

Fashion Business was fifth in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on June 9 and finished eighth in the Eddie Read Stakes. “We used that race as a prep for the Del Mar Handicap,” D’Amato said. “He wants to go long.”

Ashleyluvssugar won the 2016 Del Mar Handicap and could be a factor again on Saturday and Cashman won a stakes race in Germany last month

osa last Saturday. Whoop Whoop and YaGottaWanna would also seem to have little chance.

Del Mar Handicap Predictions

It is hard to get real excited about taking the favorite in this race considering the horse has never won at Del Mar. Kenjisstorm doesn’t seem likely to win this race wire to wire from the rail and Ashleyluvssugar has not shown much recently. Flamboyant is winless on the turf at Del Mar and probably doesn’t want to go this far. The one horse that should like the distance is Fashion Business. His trainer said the horse should love the added distance and we are getting a good price at odds of 6-1. The horse ran pretty well in the Manhattan at Belmont Park and was in front of Robert Bruce who won last week’s Arlington Million. It also doesn’t hurt that Fashion Business will be ridden by Flavien Prat who is the top rider at the current Del Mar meet. I will take Fashion Business as my top choice in this race on Saturday.

If you want an exotic wager, I think Colonist has a chance to be in the mix behind Fashion Business. The two horses finished second and third in last year’s La Jolla Handicap. I think they can both finish in the money in this race on Saturday and an exacta box or trifecta box along with Itsinthepost is worth a look.
