2018 Del Mar Debutante Stakes
||D. Van Dyke
||Watch Me Burn
Brill will be racing in stakes company for the first time in her career, but the Hollendorfer trained horse is considered the horse to beat. She had her first start on July 18th and went off as the 3-5 favorite in a 10-horse field. She got a 99 speed rating for that effort and has been off since. She had a bullet work in :59 4/5 recently and gets one of the top jockeys in Drayden Van Dyke in the irons.
Bellafina broke her maiden in her second start, winning the Sorrento on August 5. The horse earned a top Speed number of 101 for that race. She gets top jockey Flavien Prat in the irons.
Mother Motherwon by 6.5 lengths last time out as a 3-5 favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. The horse will not have Van Dyke in the irons, so Joe Talamo gets the call. "This race is pretty salty," said Baffert to the media, It's been a while since she raced, but I didn't want to run her back (so quickly) in the (Aug. 5 Sorrento Stakes (G2)). You break your maiden and you have to wait for stakes. It's how it is.Gonna be a tough race. Gonna be one of the toughest Debutantes I’ve ever been in. You’ve got three outstanding fillies. and it’s going to be a tough deal.”
Boujie Girl comes out of the Sorrento where she finished third behind Bellafina. It is hard to see Boujie Girl doing enough to compete with the top three horses on Saturday. You can say the same thing about Watch Me Burn, although at least Watch Me Burn did win by 7.5 lengths last time out against allowance/optional claimers. The question with Watch Me Burn is whether the horse can handle taking a major step up in class.
Del Mar Debutante Stakes Predictions
There is not much value in this race, as all three of the top choices are listed at odds of less than 2-1. You can easily make a case for any of the three, but I give a slight edge to Bellafina who is listed at odds of 9-5 on the morning line. She gets Prat in the irons and he is having an excellent meet at Del Mar. Brill has done nothing wrong, but everyone seems to be assuming greatness for this horse even though she hasn’t done much yet. Perhaps she will be a great filly, but I need to see more. Mother Mother is coming off a layoff and I am leery about taking horses off a long layoff, especially against a field this strong. I think Bellafina is the best choice to win this race on Saturday. If you want to take a longshot, and it is questionable whether that is even worth doing in this race, at least Watch Me Burn has won. The horse probably can’t handle the step up in class, but we really don’t know. Perhaps the horse can surprise and hit the board at nice odds.
The Del Mar Debutante Stakes has a post time of 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday.
