Oscar Nominated won this race a year ago and he is unbeaten at Kentucky Downs, as he also won a race in 2016. He is trained by Mike Maker who is Kentucky Downs’ all-time winningest trainer. Maker has five horses entered for the race, although Markitoff would only get into the race if a couple of horses get scratched. Oscar Nominated has not raced since finishing sixth in the United Nations at Monmouth Park in late June. “He’s undefeated on the course and we look for another big effort from him,” Maker said about Oscar Nominated.
There are eight horses listed at odds of 12-1 or less, so there are plenty of contenders to win this race. You have to give the horses trained by Maker the best chance. Soglio is listed at 12-1 and he has finished third in his last two starts. “He was unlucky to lose the Stars and Stripes at Arlington, didn’t have the greatest trip that day,” Maker said to the media, “He caught a wet turf course up there at Saratoga, and he just doesn’t like it.”
Bigger Picture is the second choice in the betting at odds of 9-2. He finished a closing fourth in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Bowling Green and then was eighth in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer. Maker said the horse had an excuse for that performance. “He ran so well in the Bowling Green. We felt he was the best horse and deserved a chance at the Sword Dancer, and then he got hit in the eye. Originally we weren’t going to go in the Sword Dancer but come straight to here. He kind of ran to the three-eighths pole and stopped for whatever reason. There’s a lot of racing luck involved.”
This is a really good race to take a longshot, as there are some good odds on a number of horses and the favorite in this race, Oscar Nominated is not a super horse. Nelly is an interesting choice for trainer Ian Wilkes. The horse won the San Juan Capistrano at Santa Anita earlier this year. He is coming off two less than stellar efforts in the Belmont Gold Cup and the Stars and Stripes. “I freshened Nessy up for a fall campaign here,” Wilkes said to the media, “He’s trained well. He’s ultra-consistent. If he runs his race, he’ll be right there.” Nelly finished seventh in this race last year, but he was only four lengths back. He will be getting Julien Leparoux in the irons and Leparoux won this race last year aboard Oscar Nominated.
Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup Predictions
This is a tough race to call. Oscar Nominated hasn’t been in the best form of late, but the horse loves this track. I still think he is overvalued at odds of 7-2 but he could win. I think taking a longshot is the better option, so I will take Soglio at odds of 12-1 and Nessy at odds of 15-1.
The Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup takes place on Saturday, September 8 at Kentucky Downs with a start time of 6:59 p.m. Eastern.
