Bing Crosby Stakes
||R. Hess Jr.
||Ransom the Moon
||St. Joe Bay
||Edwards Going Left
||D. Van Dyke
Saturday’s Bing Crosby Stakes will feature American Anthem who is partly owned by the same group that owns Triple Crown winner Justify. WinStar Farm, China Racing Club and Head of Plains Partners own the horse. American Anthem is trained by Bob Baffert and will be ridden by Mike Smith. That is the same combination that won the Triple Crown with Justify. American Anthem has won both starts this year as the odds-on favorite. He could be the horse to beat on Saturday.
Don’t forget about Roy H who took third last time out in the Dubai Golden Shaheen and American Pastime who was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last year. Many people will be looking at Ransom the Moon who won this race last year but the horse has finished out of the money in three of his last four races. One longshot to consider is Edwards Going Left who won the California Sprint Cup a couple of races back.
The Bing Crosby was named after the Hollywood legend and co-founder of Del Mar race track. The race has seen some great horses through the years including Kona Gold who won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Goldencents finished second in the Bing Crosby in 2013 and 2014 and went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile twice.
Bing Crosby Stakes Picks
The horse to beat on Saturday should be American Anthem. He has a hot jockey-trainer combination and he has won his last two races. The concern with backing the horse is that he will be a short price and this field is a good one, plus American Anthem has done better at 7 furlongs. I think there is more value on Roy H, especially with the horse coming off a loss. Roy H has not raced in four months and should be fresh. Jockey Kent Desormeaux said to the media recently that Roy H is training great. “He’s very energetic,” Desormeaux said. “I’ve been trying the whole time to slow him down.”
I will take Roy H to win this race on Saturday and if you are looking for a longshot to throw in the exotics, St. Joe Bay is worth a look.
Clement L. Hirsch Stakes
The Clement L. Hirsch Stakes on Sunday will feature Unique Bella trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. The horse is a multiple Grade 1 winner and should be the favorite on Sunday. "Unique Bella had a great work (July 19), and we're going to gallop her into the race," Hollendorfer said to the media. "I'm not going to blow her out this week. She's doing really well, and we think she'll run well."
The Clement L. Hirsch race has a rich history and seen a lot of great horses including Princess Rooney who is in the Racing Hall of Fame. Zenyatta won this race from 2008-2010 and the horse won the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Zenyatta won 20 straight races before losing in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
