2018 Arlington Million
||J Valdivia, Jr.
||Twenty Four Seven
||I Ortiz, Jr.
||11 Oscar Performance
The field for the Arlington Million is talented and deep, with six horses given a real chance of winning this race. Let’s look at each of the six horses and assess their chances.
Oscar Performance has done nothing but impress in his career. He won the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park in June in record time. Oscar Performance won the Secretariat Stakes last year and he will be the horse to beat on Saturday, likely from the lead.
Robert Bruce is in the Chad Brown barn and he could be the horse that gives Oscar Performance the most trouble. Robert Bruce was a perfect 7-0 until running into trouble in the Manhattan last time out. You can make a case that Robert Bruce will bounce back with a big effort on Saturday.
The question with Spring Quality is will the horse bounce after winning the Manhattan? He closed from 11th to beat Sadler’s Joy in that race. The form says bounce with Spring Quality, so I will avoid him.
Almanaar was out for a long while due to injury and then came back and won at Belmont in an allowance race in June. I think he is in over his head in this race, but he is a closer who could figure into some exotics.
Money Multiplier is yet another horse from the Brown stable. He won the Monmouth Stakes and he nearly won the United Nations. If there is a horse that could hit at nice odds and upset the apple cart it could be Money Multiplier.
I don’t know what to think of Deauville at odds of 8-1. He finished third in this race the last two years and went off as the favorite last year. He just never seems to do enough to get the money, as in 21 starts he has just four wins.
There is not much to like about Circus Couture, as he is making a huge jump in class. Century Dream is at least worth a look, as he won a stakes race at Ascot. CatchoEn Die has never done well against horses of this caliber but he does get Valdivia in the irons. Twenty Four Seven is being given a shot simply because the race is at Arlington. He is overmatched.
Arlington Million Predictions
It is easy to make a case for Oscar Performance, but this is not a sure win by any means. This field is very deep and talented. The outside post could also be a concern for Oscar Performance, so Ortiz better get his horse out quickly. I do think Oscar Performance is the best horse in the race, but I also have a lot of respect for Robert Bruce. I think one of those two horses will win the race and if both go off at odds of 3-1 or more, we will make money if one of the two hits the winners circle.
