There are two main favorites in this race, two darkhorse candidates and four longshots. The two top horses are Midnight Bisou and Talk Veuve to Me. Midnight Bisou has done very little wrong, winning four of her eight starts and finishing second in three others. She is the leading money winner in this race and has never run a bad race in her career.
If it wasn’t for Monomoy Girl, Midnight Bisou would be the class of her division. She is simply an excellent filly. "This is an incredibly salty group of fillies, this 3-year-old filly division, and it seems as though it's actually getting stronger as the year goes on," said Jeff Bloom of Bloom Racing Stable, which co-owns Midnight Bisou to the media, "But to have a filly that is right there at the top, or certainly within the top of the top-tier fillies in that division, makes us feel good. Our filly is a multiple graded stakes winner in a very tough division, and there is a still a lot of racing left to be done the remainder of the year."
Bloom said they have been looking at the Alabama Stakes for a while. "We've had the Alabama as our target for a while," Bloom said. "She's shown that 1 1/4 miles should hit her right between the eyes, and it should be a good fit for her. She didn't really have her 'A' game in the Coaching Club American Oaks, so for her to still have run as well as she did, it's encouraging for us coming into the Alabama.”
Talk VeuveTo Me has won twice in five starts with three seconds. She had the lead in the Acorn but was beaten by Monomoy Girl. Trainer RodolpheBrisset said that the horse should do well going longer distances. "Training-wise, she's always been very easy to ride, and we breezed her behind horses before and she was giving us all the signs that she could be a very nice filly going two turns," Brisset said to the media, "I think her race in the Acorn, even though Monomoy Girl went by her pretty easily … we didn't really stop. If you look at the the last three-sixteenths, she kept going. I was very interested to see her run two turns because if she could carry her speed around two turns, she could be something special going long."
Coach Rocks has only two wins in 11 starts, but the horse does have five second place finishes. She finished second behind Red
Ruby in her last two starts. She could be a factor in the exotics.
She’s a Julie has three wins in eight starts but she has not proven she can handle top level competition. She looks overvalued at odds of 8-1.
Eskimo Kisses has not beaten the top fillies yet in her career and she has never won a stakes race. Piedi Bianchi has the combination of Pletcher and Velazquez but it is hard to get too excited about a horse that has one win in seven starts. Auspicious Babe has won two of her three starts, but she has very little experience and is probably overmatched. Figarella’s Queen also looks overmatched, but at least she did finish second behind Talk Veuve to Me in the Indiana Oaks.
Alabama Stakes Picks
This race should set up perfectly for Midnight Bisou. She is a closer and she should be able to run down Talk VeuveTo Me. If you are looking for a longshot, Eskimo Kisses has a good late kick and could be worth a flyer at big odds.
