Valspar Championship - Odds and Predictions

2017 Valspar Championship Betting Picks

The PGA Tour heads to Innisbrook Resort for the Valspar Championship and a so-so betting field that includes four of the top 15 and eight of the top 30 in the current Official World Rankings.

Defending champion Charl Schwartzel +3500 is joined by Justin Thomas +1100, Bill Haas +1750, Daniel Berger +1900, Patrick Reed +2750, Gary Woodland +2000 and Charles Howell III +3000.

VENUE: Innisbrook Resort - Copperhead course has been the host course since the inception of the tournament in 2000. The 7,340 yards, par-71 is not your typical Florida layout, the Copperhead winds through rolling, tree-lined terrain and looks more like a northern course than it does a Florida one. It is a favorite among many PGA TOUR players for its no-nonsense demands. Designer Larry Packard carved double doglegs on a pair of par-5s, putting a premium on positioning to reach the green in two, and the closing three holes make up the “Snake Pit” which was the fourth toughest finishing stretched on the PGA Tour a year ago.

LAST YEAR: South African Charl Schwartzel notched his first win in the U.S. since his 2011 epic Masters triumph. He made up three shots over the final six holes to force a playoff before prevailing over Bill Haas. Schwartzel began the final day five shots off the pace and still trailed by three as he headed to the 13th tee. A timely 65-foot birdie from across the green and he was on his way. Schwartzel’s 4-under-par 67 was the best round of the day and when Haas’ made bogey on the first playoff hole, the South African was on top.

TV Coverage: Thursday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET - Golf Channel. Saturday-Sunday, 1-3 p.m. Golf Channel, 3-6 p.m. - NBC.

Valspar Championship Predictions

Luke Donald +5000 almost quit the game entirely a year ago, but now has regained his form and more importantly his attitude to perform at a high level. His wedge game is one of the best in the world and he’s regained his deft putting stroke that saw him rise to the No. 1 player in the world. He won here in 2012 and will be in the mix on Sunday afternoon at Innisbrook.

Veteran Steve Stricker +8000 has been busy getting ready to captain the U.S. Team in the upcoming President’s Cup, but he thrives on tough tracks and with a putting stroke like his, he doesn’t need many starts to be at the top of his game. Stricker will surprise this week and is worth a look in all formats.

FADE: Bubba Watson +3300 continues to struggle with his game and doesn’t seem to care about it much. He’s making his first visit to the Copperhead course since 2011 and the venue does not fit his game. Watson needs to show me some form and until he does, I’m fading him!

The Valspar Championship golf tournament is scheduled to start March 9-12, 2017 at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Golf Channel and NBC will televise the event.
