Titans vs. Jaguars ATS Picks

Pro Week 2 NFL lines

The Jacksonville Jaguars put forth one of the more impressive and surprising efforts of the opening week taking it to the Houston Texans in their own house. On the flipside, the Tennessee Titans fell at home to the Oakland Raiders for a third straight time. With Indianapolis also going down in defeat, the Jags enter Week 2 atop the AFC South standings. That’s something Mike Mularkey’s squad will look to rectify in their first trip away from Nashville.

Defense is what plagued the Titans a season ago with the unit conceding 357.5 yards per game ( No. 20 ) and just under 24 points per game ( No. 17 ). It once again had issues containing a Raiders offense in allowing Derek Carr to pass for 262 yards and a couple scores, and Marshawn Lynch to rush for 76 yards on 18 carries. Oakland’s top two wide receivers, Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, combined for 11 receptions, 145 yards and a touchdown. No turnovers were forced and only a couple sacks tallied.

Tennessee’s offense is expected to make a huge jump in the rankings this season. That unfortunately didn’t happen in Week 1 after it combined for only 350 yards and saw both Marcus Mariota and DeMarco Murray fail to tally any touchdowns. After going off for 114 yards and a touchdown in last year’s meeting, Murray’s 44 yards on 12 carries were a big disappointment. He’s the fuel that runs this offense, and he’ll be counted on to loosen up a Jags defense that simply shut the Texans poor passing attack down last week.

Through one week of play, the addition of Calais Campbell to the Jaguars defensive line looks to be the best get of the offseason. The veteran set the tone for the Jags registering four sacks to earn the franchise’s record for most individual sacks in a game. The fun didn’t stop there however with the rest of the defense tallying six more sacks to make it an even 10 for the game. The dominance made the team’s social media staff change their Twitter handle to #Sacksonville.

The other big news to report on the Jags 29-7 handling of the Texans was the rookie debut of former LSU stud running back Leonard Fournette. He showed no rust whatsoever after missing a bulk of the preseason by rushing for a game-high 100 yards on 26 carries. He also pulled in three receptions for 24 yards, and scored his first touchdown. It was a banner day for Fournette and his fantasy backers. Look for Jacksonville to continue playing excellent defense and attempt to dictate game tempo with its newfound ground attack.

Injury Report

The Jaguars already unimpressive passing offense suffered a huge blow last Sunday when Allen Robinson went down with a season-ending knee injury. Off a disaster of a campaign last year, the injury couldn’t have occurred at a worse time. Should Jacksonville run up against an opponent adept at stopping the run, it will put the team’s fortunes on the right arm of Blake Bortles. That’s a recipe for disaster. His turnover prone ways didn’t show up last week simply due to the offense not needing to throw the ball. But when the heat is on, it will be a completely different story. Guys like Allen Hurns, Arrelious Benn and Dede Westbrook, when he gets healthy, need to step up moving forward.

Titans vs. Jaguars Picks

This game originally opened up at a pick ‘em, but the line has since shifted towards the visiting Titans. A lofty 81 percent of the betting handle at the best NFL sportsbooks have been flooded with Tennessee money ultimately turning the visitors into 1.5-point road favorites. A surprising move since the Titz have failed to win or cover each of their last three visits to EverBank Field. Going back even further, they’re 1-5 straight up and 0-5-1 against the spread in the last six. Be that as it may, this is a game the team must take with an arduous schedule upcoming over the next month. Jacksonville still possesses an extremely flawed offense, and it just lost one of its biggest impact players for the season. This is a big spot for Mariota. If he brings his “A” game, the Jaguars won’t have enough in the tank offensively to defend their house.
