Super Bowl National Anthem Betting Picks

NFL Super Bowl LI Picks

One of the first bets that will be decided of all the Super Bowl prop bets is the length of the National Anthem. As the years have gone along and the Super Bowls have added up more and more people have enjoyed betting on the introduction before The Big Game. Whether or not you’re a sports fan doesn’t matter with our nation’s song and that has led non-sports fans to get in on the action too. This year’s over/under opened at 2 minutes even, but has since jumped to 2 minutes and 10 seconds after a spate of over action.

National Anthem Length 130.00 Seconds

Over -140
Under +100

This total is in line with previous over/unders on National Anthem length, but it’s a little surprising to see the over so heavily bet. Not too long ago, we saw Luke Bryan belt out the National Anthem at the MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City and there Bryan clocked in at 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Although he wasn’t holding onto syllables for extended lengths like some singers are wont to do, he did appear to be stalling just a little bit to make sure that his finale synced up with a F-117 Nighthawk flyover.

Additionally, country singers are typically succinct singers. Unlike pop stars or opera singers, they don’t overextend on their singing and instead wrap things up in short order. Over the last 25 years, there have been four country music acts that have performed the National Anthem and none of the four cracked the 2 minute mark.

The closest of the bunch was back at Super Bowl XXXIV when Faith Hill’s version of the anthem ran 1 minute and 59 seconds. At Super Bowl XXVII, Garth Brooks’ rendition went on for just 1 minute and 45 seconds and at Super Bowl XXXVII the Dixie Chicks finished up in just 1 minute and 33 seconds. The most recent country music star to perform was Carrie Underwood, who wrapped up the National Anthem in 1 minute and 47 seconds at Super Bowl XLIV.

If you’re looking for recent history to decide what side to bet, recent history would side with the under as well. Six of the last 11 Super Bowl National Anthem performances have finished under 2 minutes and only two went 2 minutes and 10 seconds or above. Jennifer Hudson hit the mark right on the nose at 2 minutes and 10 seconds in Super Bowl XLIII, but that pales in comparison to Alicia Keys.

Keys was credited as having sung the anthem for 2 minutes and 35 seconds, but those numbers are a little skewed. Throughout her performance of the anthem, Keys was also playing the piano and that led to a much longer version than what would have been otherwise. Bryan is not expected to have any musical instruments accompanying him or else that would lengthen the anthem.

Something that is cause for pause is the video of his last National Anthem performance. A little less than 6 months ago, Bryan was at a concert at US Bank Stadium and decided to get patriotic and send the National Anthem. There, he sung the anthem for an extended 2 minutes and 27 seconds to thunderous cheers. However, he was likely egged on to draw out certain parts by his fans in attendance and he won’t have that same kind of audience in the Super Bowl. It’s almost a lock that his Super Bowl rendition will be much shorter than this provided the occasion.

Honestly, I liked the under back when it was an even 2 minutes. Country music stars have historically kept it under the 2-minute mark and although Bryan can run long at times, it’s likely that he will be respectful of the moment and keep it short. Men have also tended to keep the National Anthem shorter than women have and that further helps the under case. This line could still move if word on his rehearsals leak but trust the under closer to kickoff.
