Seahawks vs. Patriots TV Coverage: NBC
After enduring a two week stretch that saw them tie in Arizona and fall 25-20 at the Saints, Monday’s 31-25 win and cover was huge for Seattle on a number of different fronts. For starters, it was a win. Those always help when marred by poor play. The 35 points put on the board were the most since dropping 37 on the 49ers back in Week 3. And finally, coming back to not only win the game, but to cover it for some by withstanding the Bills final march could have this team headed back in the right direction.
The Seahawks have won each of their four home games, but only stand 1-2-1 on the road with the lone triumph against a very poor Jets team. A much tighter defensive effort will be needed if Seattle is to knock off a second straight AFC East opponent after allowing the Bills to rack up 425 combined yards. Most bothersome was the 162 yards given up on the ground. Allow New England to run wild like that, and it will be a long night in Foxborough.
Last we saw the Patriots in live action, they took it to the same Bills team in Buffalo winning 41-25 as 5.5 point favorites. It was the team’s fourth straight win both straight up and against the spread. Though Brady felt a ton of heat with him getting dropped to the turf five times, he still excelled throwing for 315 yards and four touchdowns. Rob Gronkowski was the main beneficiary in hauling in five of seven targets for 109 yards and a touchdown.
With Brady back in under center, New England has scored an average of 34 points per game. While that’s impressive, don’t discredit what the defense has done as well in holding three of its last four opponents in the teens. The Pats currently own the league’s No. 2 ranked scoring defense (16.5 PPG) and No. 1 ranked defensive yards per point average (21.5).
Matchup to Watch
Regardless of the Seahawks allowing LeSean McCoy to run wild last week, I don’t foresee LeGarrette Blount or any other Patriot running back being able to mimic that output. I’d be shocked if New England combined for more than 75 yards on the ground. With that the case, it’s going to all boil down to how well Richard Sherman and the Seahawks secondary is able to limit the Pats passing attack.
Seattle has done a solid job limiting opposing tight ends all season, but is yet to face one as good as Rob Gronkowski. He only hauled in six receptions for 68 yards and a score in Super Bowl XLIX, and that’s a stat line Carroll will be happy to concede this time around. Limiting Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Martellus Bennett is also high on the pecking order for the Seahawks to come out of this one with a win.
Seahawks vs. Patriots Free Picks
This might just be the first must-see Monday Night Football matchup of the season. Seattle certainly has the roster makeup and prime time players of their own to go into Foxborough and prevent the Patriots from increasing their win streak to five. For that to occur, Russell Wilson must build off last week’s game that saw him moving around a bit better. He scored his first rushing touchdown of the season, and if his lower body ailments are finally a thing of the past, he’ll likely be a terror for New England’s defense to deal with.
In the end, I don’t foresee it happening. Brady has gone an insane 14-1 SU at home in prime-time games, and has so many weapons at his disposal to utilize. Still, I expect the Seahawks to keep it interesting with them 2-1 versus the NFL odds at BookMaker.eu the last three times it went off the board dogged on the road. Look for New England to clinch the win with a run off tackle on the 1-yard line.
