The Saints held up their end of the bargain last week by overcoming a game Tampa Bay Buccaneers outfit to pull out the 31-24 victory and cover as 3 point favorites. The triumph and pointspread cover was the team’s second straight, but because it dropped back-to-back affairs with the Lions and Bucs in the first meeting the two weeks prior, it has since been eliminated from postseason contention.
That makes it three straight years that New Orleans failed to qualify for the playoffs. It’s possible the same old song and dance has grown stale in the bayou, and even if the team comes out on top in this spot, it will make it three straight seasons of playing .500 or worse football.
A year removed from getting out to a smoking hot start and faltering the rest of the way, the Falcons have a shot at securing the second best record in the NFC with a win in their Week 17 home finale. With it would come a bye next week and a home game the Division Round. As good a season as Dan Quinn’s squad has put forth, it’s hard to see them faltering in this matchup against a Saints team likely just going through the motions.
The Falcons wasted no time winning and covering their third straight game last week after taking a 7-0 lead before the Bank of America crowd got comfortable in their seats. The lead was stretched to 13-0 before the Panthers finally got on the board, but Atlanta ended up blowing them out for the second time this season. The Falcons enter their regular season finale 3-0 straight up and against the spread winning by the aggregate score of 116-43.
These division rivals played even through one quarter of play back in Week 3, but it was all Falcons from that point forward with the Dirty Birds outscoring the Saints 38-25 the rest of the way to log the 45-32 road win and cover as 3 point Monday Night Football underdogs.
Both starting quarterbacks had solid showings with Matt Ryan completing 20 of 30 passes for 240 yards and a pair of touchdown strikes, while Drew Brees answered with 376 passing yards and a 3:1 TD/INT ratio. Over 900 yards of combined offense was tallied to easily cash over tickets for the first time in these rival’s last four meetings.

These teams met at Atlanta in Week 17 of last season as well. That game saw the Saints win in the Georgia Dome for the second time in their last three visits. That tilt didn’t have nearly the same ramifications this game has however with the Falcons looking to lock up the No. 2 seed. That said, New Orleans has been one of the best teams to back on the NFL odds at BookMaker.eu when on the road with it 6-1 against the spread, and it’s defense has played a much better brand of ball than it was when Atlanta paid them a visit earlier in the season. Look for Atlanta to come out on top of this tilt, but for the Saints to make them earn it.
