Redskins vs. Ravens ATS Picks

NFL Week 5 Odds

The Baltimore Ravens will look to end their futility at home both straight up and against the spread in Week 5 when they battle the Washington Redskins in hopes of clawing above .500 in front of the hometown faithful for the season. The Ravens certainly bring the better overall defense into this matchup, but will it be enough to keep a Redskins offense that’s averaged 30 points per game the last two weeks.

Date and Time: Sunday, October 9, 2016, 1 p.m. ET
Location: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD
Week 5 NFL Odds at BookMaker.eu: Ravens -3.5, 46.5

Oddsmakers gave the Redskins very little chance of repeating as NFC East champs at the outset of the season lining both Dallas and New York as shorter favorites to win the division. Through two weeks of play, the disrespect looked to be warranted with Jay Gruden’s squad dropping its first two home games against Pittsburgh and Dallas.

The downward spiral ended however in Week 3 when Kirk Cousins had his best game of the season to lead the Skins to the comeback 29-27 outright win at the New York Giants. They then pulled out a sloppy 31-20 win last week, but only managed to cover the closing number due to the Browns simply just being the Browns. Washington will invade M&T Bank Stadium winners of four straight on the road, all as underdogs.

The Ravens underwent one of the worst seasons ever under the current regime last year. Injuries played a major role, and even though numerous playmakers were shelved, Baltimore still went on to win five games and closed the season with pointspread covers in four of their last six played games.

Still, it was tough to gauge how good or how bad the Ravens were even after getting out to a perfect 3-0 start. Toppling Buffalo, Cleveland and Jacksonville was nothing to brag about, so last week’s tilt with the Raiders was a litmus test of sorts. Even though they lost and failed to cover their first game of the year, John Harbaugh’s squad displayed some solid grit and determination to fight back to take a lead before ultimately falling short.

Matchup to Watch

Though Joe Flacco was only sacked twice last week, he was routinely running for his life in hopes of evading Oakland defenders. That wreaked havoc on the passing game’s rhythm, and it will be paramount that Baltimore finds a way to keep Washington’s front seven from doing the same.

Washington is conceding better than 413 total yards per game (No. 29) with over 280 of those yards coming through the air (No. 25). Baltimore has had all kinds of issues running the football, so the offense’s success will likely be dictated by the unit’s ability to move the ball via the pass. For that to happen, the offensive line must amp up its game.

Redskins vs. Ravens Free Picks

If not for some badly timed turnovers by Cleveland last week, the Redskins would have lost their third straight home game even after getting out to a 14-0 lead. The magic from a year ago simply hasn’t carried over into 2016, and this looks to be a very bad spot for Cousins and company with the Ravens entering Week 5 off their first loss of the season.

Washington is middle of the road in terms of offensive yard per point average, while Baltimore is conceding the fewest yards per game in the league (256) and allows just 18 points per game (No. 7). Defensively, Washington isn’t even in the same stratosphere. Even though Washington has been a lucrative side to back when in the road dog role, this looks to be an excellent get-well spot for the home team. I’ll be backing the Ravens on the odds at BookMaker.eu to get back into the win column.
