Offensive miscues. Defensive miscues. Special teams miscues. That right there in a nutshell is why the Redskins dropped their fifth straight season opener 30-17 to the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. The defense had absolutely no answer for the Eagles revamped passing attack with Carson Wentz torching the unit for 307 yards and a couple scores. The offense was able to move the ball through the air, but the ground game forced it to do so with it gaining just 64 yards on 17 carries.
Cousins final stat line of 23/40 for 240 yards and a 1:1 TD/INT ratio wasn’t terrible, but the mistakes he made came at the absolute worst time. His pair of fumbles and interception allowed for Philly to take a big lead, retake the lead, and close the game out. It was a disappointing effort for the QB1 who wanted nothing more than to impress in his first game out considering all the offseason drama. He’ll need some relief from his ground game to truly get going, but you can be sure a Rams defense that only allowed 225 total yards to the Colts will have something to say about that.
If only you got to line up against a Scott Tolzien offense every week! LA’s defense was flat out dominant in the 37 point drubbing limiting of Indianapolis to just 75 yards on the ground and returning a pair of interceptions for touchdowns. On top of all that, the unit tallied four quarterback sacks and countess hurries. All this with stud lineman Aaron Donald watching from the sideline.
The story of the day however was Jared Goff who badly needed to have a good showing after going 0-7 and being the butt of many NFL draft jokes after being selected as the No. 1 pick. He ended up throwing for a career-high 306 yards and a touchdown. Most importantly, he completed 72.4 percent of his passes and spread them around to eight different targets. Todd Gurley didn’t have the banner day his fantasy backers hoped for, but combining for 96 yards and a touchdown was a good start after coming off a terrible sophomore campaign.
The Rams must get the most of their emotions heading into this one. A year removed from winning a grand total of one game at home, that coming in their home opener against Seattle, Los Angeles now finds itself 1-0 and atop the NFC West standings. They put a ton of energy and emotion to win that game for their new coach and the city. They did it, and did so emphatically. Now, they have to stick to their laurels and get even better. Though the opponent they’ll face has their own internal issues and is learning new things of its own on both sides of the ball, it’s finished product is much better than what they faced last week against the overmatched Colts.
Redskins vs. Rams Picks
It’s shocking to think about when you consider how bad the Rams were a season ago, but the top 10 online sportsbooks will once again find themselves sweating out another Los Angeles game. The betting public pounded LA against the Colts at a better than 75 percent clip, and were rewarded handsomely for doing so. Early betting for this Week 2 tilt has upwards of 87 percent of the handle once again riding Sean McVay’s squad. Now I get that he possesses pertinent info on Washington after calling the offensive plays the previous two seasons, but his team isn’t better than what the Skins will march into Tinseltown on Sunday. Regardless of Jay Gruden’s squad still working out its own kinks.
With a game scheduled next week at home against Oakland, the Redskins can ill afford to go winless into that matchup. Look for a completely different team than the one we saw last week to spoil the Rams mojo and secure their first win of the season. If Goff is able to torch this defense like Wentz did, so be it. I don’t see it happening. LA doesn’t have the receiving weapons that Philly possesses.
