Redskins vs. Eagles TV Coverage: ESPN
Right before the Redskins went on bye in Week 5, they pissed a game away versus the Chiefs in Kansas City. They almost did the exact same thing last week after bolting out to a commanding 17-0 lead, but was still forced to hold on to secure the 26-24 win and non-cover against the winless San Francisco 49ers. Cousins had a monster game completing 25 of 37 passes to nine different receivers for 330 yards and a 2:1 TD/INT ratio.
He now gets the pleasure of running up against a Philadelphia squad that’s had all kinds of issues defending opposing passing attacks in allowing 273.5 yards per game. That said, Washington has been an incredibly difficult team to cap this season with Jay Gruden electing to run when he should pass against poor pass defenses, and passing when he should run against leaky run defenses. Who knows what he decided to do tonight?
The Philadelphia Eagles are no longer the hidden gem they were before going into Carolina and handing a resurgent Panthers team a decisive 28-23 defeat as 3-point underdogs. The pointspread cover was the team’s third straight after getting the best of Arizona and the Los Angeles Chargers the two weeks prior. All eyes will now be on the NFC East frontrunners with the target sitting firmly on top of their heads.
While the caliber of opposition over the last month can be questioned, there’s no doubting this franchise has taken a giant leap forward in the second year of the new coaching regime. Jim Schwartz has got his guys flying around like madmen on the defensive side of the ball limiting opponents to just over 20 points per game, while forcing 11 turnovers. Offensively, the Eagles unleash a balanced attack with both the passing and rushing offense ranked amongst the top-10.
Matchup to Watch
Whichever of these sides is best able to limit their opponent’s passing attacks will likely come out the victor in this contest. Washington simply had no answer for Wentz in the Week 1 clash allowing the second-year field general to torch them for 307 yards and a 2:1 TD/INT ratio. Surprisingly, Cousins struggled against what’s turned out to be the weak link of the Eagles defense in managing just 240 yards passing and a 1:1 TD/INT ratio. Neither side was able to do much on the ground which hardly comes as a surprise considering the Eagles currently possess the top ranked run defense ( 65.7 YPG ) while the Redskins check in at No. 8 ( 88.0 YPG ). Cousins is going to need someone other than Chris Thompson or Vernon Davis to win this matchup against Wentz.
Redskins vs. Eagles Picks
There’s been a good amount of reverse line movement at top-rated NFL sportsbooks heading into this crucial divisional clash. The Eagles originally opened as 5.5-point home chalk but has since fallen to -4.5 even though nearly 60 percent of the betting handle is riding the home team. Much of that likely has to do with the Redskins recent dominance of the rivalry in winning five of the previous meetings before going down at home back in Week 1. Washington has also won two straight and covered each of its last three visits to Lincoln Financial Field. As good a start the Eagles have gotten out to through the first six weeks, it almost looks too easy to back them in this Monday night spot. Washington has been a great bet in the visitor’s role by covering 10 of the last 13 times, and the underdog has been the pointspread victor in five of these rival’s last seven meetings. I’ll roll the dice and call for the Skins to exact some same-season revenge in a nail biter.
