The betting public clearly overreacted to Week 1’s all-out demolition of Indianapolis. The Colts are a bad football team, and it showed with the defense having a field day and Jared Goff having a career day. When the line closed for Sunday’s tilt against the Redskins, Los Angeles found itself bet up to a field goal favorite. It then proceeded to fall into a 13-0 hole at the start of the second quarter. But instead of giving up and taking its ball back home, LA fought back to tie the game on two occasions.
It didn’t have enough in the tank to see it all the way through, falling 27-20 to move the over to an unblemished 2-0 to start the year. A major positive did however come out of the game with Todd Gurley combining for 136 total yards and a couple scores. His best game in seemingly forever was unfortunately overshadowed by the defense’s inability to hinder a Washington rushing attack that went off for a whopping 229 yards and 5.9 yards per carry.
Nobody wanted a piece of the 49ers last Sunday in Seattle. Only the Jets took less action than San Francisco who closed as hefty 13.5 point underdogs in front of the 12th Man. The betting public thought it would be easy money with a whopping 78 percent of the handle laying the points. The end result did end up being a walk in the park, just not for the side getting all the action. The Niners ended up losing by just three points, and it took a Seahawks touchdown mid-way through the fourth quarter just to pull out the win.
A week removed from holding Carolina to less than 300 yards of combined offense, Robert Saleh’s defense held the Seahawks to just 312 combined yards and registered three sacks. Unfortunately, it didn’t force any turnovers and allowed Seattle to rush for 131 yards. With the offense failing to score a touchdown for a second straight week, the effort simply wasn’t good enough to allow for the Niners to pull the shocking road upset.
The Rams will be out to snap a three game road losing streak in a venue they’ve dropped two straight in, and only managed two wins in their last 10 visits. The 49ers swept last season’s rivalry skunking the Rams in their season opener 28-0, and following it up with a 22-21 outright win and cover as 5.5 point underdogs in their trip to the Coliseum. The Niners have dominated this series dating back to 2012 by winning seven of the last 10, while also coming out the pointspread victor in six of those contests. The last meeting combined for an over, but before that, under bettor’s cashed four straight tickets. These rivals have played to the under each of the last four times they hooked up in San Francisco.
Rams vs. 49ers Picks
Los Angeles finds itself favored at top-rated sportsbooks for a third straight week. While the Rams got the backing of the betting public over the first two weeks, that won’t be the case on Thursday night. The betting line has already been bet down to -2.5 even though LA’s received better than 65 percent of the action. With Jared Goff yet to have a good game on the road in his career and Brian Hoyer still searching for his first touchdown pass, you have to imagine both offenses will lean to their respective run games in this tilt. Especially with each run defense ranked amongst the bottom third of the league. With that the case, look for the clock to get some burn, leading to these division rivals playing to yet another low scorer.
