We were heavy on the Raiders in Gruden’s debut as the franchise’s new head coach. Much of the reason why had to do with him proving to be a preseason moneymaker in the past. The other reason mainly had to do with it being Matt Patricia’s first go round as head coach. In the end, we were pretty lucky to cash the ticket in a game that could’ve gone either way.
Regardless, a win is a win any way you cut it. In securing the 16-10 win and cover as 3.5 point favorites per the closing preseason NFL betting lines, Gruden improved to 31-16 SU and 25-18-4 ATS lifetime in the exhibition season. One of the main storylines to come out of the game was the Raiders actually running the pigskin a ton. When the dust cleared, 31 rushes went for a whopping 147 yards. That’s something you rarely saw from the previous regime.
While I was right in breakdown of the Raiders Week 1 tilt against the Lions, I wasn’t even in the same stratosphere when it came to the Rams and Ravens. I was left scratching my head as to why the betting public seemed so enamored with Baltimore. So much to the point that I not only recommended taking LA plus the points, but to also sprinkle some beer money on the moneyline.
Not even close! Jared Goff didn’t see a single snap, and the battery of Brandon Allen and Sean Mannion didn’t stand a chance against a locked in Ravens outfit that took LA out behind the woodshed and served up the 33-7 beat down covering all numbers from -1 at the open to -3.5 at the close. It was 26-0 in the fourth quarter before the Rams finally hit the scoreboard.
This is one of those rare spots where the teams meet up in the preseason as well as the regular season. Whenever those spots arise, I normally look to take the points and hit the low side of the total. Reason being; neither of the teams are going to want to show their true hands in order to save the best of the playbook for when the game truly counts. Making this tilt even more of a dead nuts under call is the fact that the teams open their respective regular season campaigns against one another in the second leg of the Monday Night Football doubleheader. With both squads likely to play possum, points should be held in check. That is unless the backups go bonkers in the second half.

While Los Angeles will no doubt look to put a better semblance of itself onto the playing field in Week 2, I got a sneaking suspicion McVay rolls over in this one. Gruden loves to win in the preseason, and McVay is going to let him do what he loves to do best so as to procure a false sense of security when the teams collide in Week 1. Though the betting market has sunk the total 3.5 points lower than where it originally opened, it’s under or nothing for me. The Rams won’t get embarrassed like they did last week, but they won’t win the game either.
