The Raiders were up 33-14 with just under 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Why the heck was David Carr even on the field? If you wanted him to run the offense, fine. Hand the ball off and attempt to keep moving the chains to milk the clock as much as possible. Don’t let him throw a meaningless pass to pick up a first down!
Immediately after he went down, the Colts got on the comeback trail putting tow scores on the board to turn a carefree waltz in the park into a game that saw backup Matt McGloin need to convert a long third down try to prevent Indy from getting the ball back late with a chance to tie the game. Owners of the league’s No. 9 ranked passing attack, Carr’s injury couldn’t have come at a worst time in the season.
The Denver Broncos likely lost a game to the Chiefs they likely shouldn’t have back in Week 12. But in Week 16, they had no business being on the same field with a Kansas City team that pushed the behind the 8-ball almost immediately and never looked back. Alex Smith led KC to a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play.
The offense couldn’t do anything, and the defense looked gassed almost immediately. Denver was once again gouged on the ground with Tyreke Hill, Spencer Ware, Smith and Charcandrick West combining for a whopping 238 yards on 37 total carries; good for a 6.4 yards per carry average. The unit will no doubt get heavy doses of Latavius Murray, DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard in this one.
Oakland seized control of the Week 9 meeting almost immediately by taking a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. It scored the first touchdown less than a minute into the second quarter when Murray crossed the goal line from a yard out to give the Raiders a 13-0 lead. The lead was 30-13 late in the fourth quarter when the Broncos scored on a fluke 69 yard dump off to Kapri Bibbs. All it did was make the final score a bit more respectable.
Jack Del Rio’s squad outgained Denver’s 397-299 and won the turnover battle 2:0 en route to logging the 30-20 win and cover as 1 point favorites. Most importantly, it dominated time of possession by nearly 23 minutes by racking up 30 first downs with a punishing ground assault.
Raiders vs. Broncos Free Picks
Early action has taken the side of the Raiders even though McGloin will be under center for the foreseeable future. I agree with the early line move. Oakland’s passing game won’t even be a part of the equation in this one. Denver’s defense is completely out of steam right now. The Broncos offense has scored a grand total of 34 points in its last four games, and that offensive ineptitude has simply taken the defense out of the equation. Because of it, Denver has dropped four of five both straight up and against the closing NFL odds at Bookmaker.eu. The Raiders haven’t swept the season series with the Broncos since 2010, but that streak is going to come to an end in Week 17 when it once again looks to their punishing ground attack to lead the team to victory.
