Ron Rivera overlooked one of the most dominating units the league had to offer a short season ago. That’s simply not the case this season with Carolina conceding 27 points per game (No. 27) and a 12.6 defensive yards per point average (No. 31). Gross stats when you take into account how nasty this stop unit was just a short season ago. As it is, the Panthers are now a +4350 longshot at winning Super Bowl LI after being considered one of the favorites out of the NFC heading into the season.
The Panthers have been favored in each of their two played road games and lost both the Denver in Week 1 and Atlanta in Week 4.
The Saints have failed to qualify for the playoffs each of the last two seasons. Last second losses to the Raiders and Giants to kick off the season didn’t do much of anything to make the Saints frenzied fan base feel any better about snapping that streak. The loss on Monday Night Football likely made most give up hope. Then the team came up with a huge 35-34 win over the San Diego Chargers right before their bye to give the team new hope.
This is a huge revenge spot for the home team with the Panthers going into the Superdome and coming out victorious each of the last two seasons. Before that, it had dropped four of its previous five visits.
Cam Newton – While the offense was able to put up over 400 yards of combined offense against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, turnovers once again killed any shot of the Panthers coming out victorious. Derek Anderson has already thrown four interceptions since stepping in for the concussed Newton. While Cam has already thrown five to date, the offense needs him back under center leading this offense to have any shot of turning this sinking ship around.
While he remains in the concussion protocol at the time of this writing, he was seen lifting weights and throwing passes to his younger receivers on Monday. Rivera believes he’ll have his QB1 back under center for this crucial divisional battle with the Saints.
Panthers vs. Saints Free Picks
Regardless of whether Newton goes on Sunday or not, the Panthers are a stinking hot mess that I want absolutely no part of. The offensive line is allowing opposing defenses to sack their quarterback 2.6 times per game (No. 23), and while New Orleans has gotten limited pressure on opposing quarterbacks, Carolina’s -3 turnover differential has me staying far, far away.
I do however believe this will be a high scoring game. The over is a combined 6-3 in these team’s nine played games, and it cashed against the odds at BookMaker.eu in both regular season meetings a year ago with an average of 65.0 points per game put on the board. This one has shootout written all over it, so bang the over once the total hits the board.
