Panthers vs. Jaguars TV Coverage: Local
Offensively, the Panthers haven’t had much of any issue racking up yardage and putting points on the board through their first two preseason games. The offense ranks No. 3 in total yards ( 387 YPG ) and No. 4 in points scored ( 27.0 PPG ). The trio of back-up quarterbacks Derek Anderson, Garrett Gilbert and Joe Webb have all taken care of business leading total bettors to two straight easy cashes on the over.
Cam Newton still hasn’t taken a single snap in the exhibition season, but he has to like the situation he’ll be getting himself into on Thursday night with the offensive line doing a heck of a job both protecting the quarterback and opening up some massive holes for the ground attack. The front wall has only allowed three quarterback sacks through two games, and been one of the main reasons why the offense is averaging a league-best 156.5 rushing yards per game.
The last thing the Jaguars needed to occur before the regular season began was a quarterback controversy. Be that as it may, it’s exactly what Doug Marrone and his staff have been forced to deal with due to the fact that Blake Bortles has looked absolutely terrible in his limited action.
"I'm looking for someone that's going to lead this offense," Marrone said after the Jaguars' 12-8 loss to Tampa Bay at EverBank Field. "I'm not happy with the performance today. I'm not going to sit here and B.S. anyone. Everyone saw it out there. Whatever you want to call it, I'm still trying to evaluate who the best person is at that position."
To date, Bortles has completed 11 of 18 passes for 81 yards without a touchdown with the bright side being he hasn’t thrown any interceptions; yet. Henne is 11 of 16 for 183 yards and one touchdown and hasn’t thrown any picks either. Should the career back-up seriously get the No. 1 gig, you can’t help but think another long season is in store for this win-starved franchise.
Player To Watch
Many wondered how former Stanford University standout Christian McCaffrey’s game would translate to the NFL level. Through two preseason games, it’s safe to say he’s going to not only fit in just fine, but be a tremendous weapon offensive coordinator Mike Shula will get to unleash on opposing defenses for the foreseeable future.
Every time he’s touched the pigskin, it’s felt like a big play was about to go down. He popped his touchdown cherry against the Titans last week with a 17 yard end zone splash, and added an impressive run after a screen pass that Panthers fans will get very used to seeing this season. Jonathan Stewart likely won’t get pushed out of his RB1 gig, but objects in his rearview mirror are getting closer than they appear. Carolina has never had a talented weapon like McCaffrey coming out of the backfield in the franchise’s existence which has fantasy players drooling!
Panthers vs. Jaguars Free Picks
The Jaguars were already dogged at home against Tampa Bay last week, so it makes perfect sense to see them installed slight underdogs in this one as well. The Buccaneers 1st team dominated the first half of the game which had Marrone go on record about just how dissatisfied he was. You got the quarterback controversy, the defense playing terribly, and No. 1 draft pick Leonard Fournette roaming the sidelines.
All these negatives will have preseason bettors lined up in droves to back Carolina with Cam likely making his first appearance. The Jags are a much better team than the one that showed up last Thursday night, and there’s no way they’ll allow an opponent to push them around in their own house in successive weeks. I’ll be fading that position at one of the top-rated sportsbooks and suggest you do the same.
