Packers vs. Lions ATS Picks

NFL Week 17 NFL Betting Online

We’ve seen this story line before. The Green Bay Packers needing to win out just to make the playoffs. The last time it happened, they punched their ticket to the playoffs in Week 17 and then went on to win the whole damn thing! Could a repeat effort be in the cards? Only a Detroit Lions squad now fighting for its playoff lives could prevent that from happening. The scenario makes for the perfect installment of Sunday Night Football.

Week 17 NFL Odds at Packers -3, 49
Packers vs. Lions TV Coverage: NBC

With the Lions spitting the bit in Big D last Monday night, the playoff picture became very clear for Aaron Rodgers and his mates. Win and you’re in. It’s that simple. In rattling off five straight wins after disposing of the Vikings at Minnesota last weekend, Green Bay finds itself in the best possible scenario at a point in the season when it matters most.

The Packers offense has seemingly awoken from its slumber during the win streak in scoring an average of 30.8 points per game. Rodgers has played like a man possessed ever since the Pack was embarrassed by the Redskins on Sunday Night Football amassing 1,367 passing yards and a perfect 11:0 TD/INT ratio. Jordy Nelson has been his main beneficiary, and with the Lions just allowing Dez Bryant to burn them for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns, another good showing looks to be in the cards.

Detroit’s fall from grace hardy comes as a surprise. The team was doing it with smoke and mirrors early on coming up with huge fourth quarter comeback after huge fourth quarter comeback to hold onto its spot atop the NFC North standings. Looks like this cat has run out of lives!

The Lions actually looked like a playoff caliber team halfway through the second quarter of last week’s game against the Cowboys, but after taking a 21-14 lead, the game quickly turned into a nightmare. Dallas rattled off the game’s final 28 points and went on to cruise to the 42-21 win and cover. The loss was Jim Caldwell’s squad’s second straight and third in a row failing to cover the closing pointspread. Still, this is a team that’s won six of its seven home games but didn’t face a single team currently in the playoffs.

Player to Watch

Matthew Stafford – Just as he was last week, he’ll once again be the most important player on the field for the Lions who need him to be able to sling the pigskin around successfully to compete in this matchup. He threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns in the first meeting, but accrued a ton of those stats after the game was already well in hand for the Packers who got out to a 31-3 first half lead. He must turn the jets on early. If not, the Packers will likely already be milking the game away.

Green Bay has taken two in a row and three of the last four overall meetings between these division rivals. Included in that mix is a 27-23 win and cover at Ford Field which snapped their two game road losing streak to the Lions. I don’t like the way the Lions look right now. Their overall body of work was already scary before it started spiraling against playoff worthy opposition. Now that it’s dropped two straight, I want absolutely nothing to do with this pretender.

I simply don’t trust Detroit to make enough plays and not turn the ball over at a crucial point in this game. Up until this season, the Lions had fallen 16 straight times as home underdogs in the 3 to 3.5 point range. They’re also just 4-10 versus the NFL betting odds at the last 14 times they opposed a divisional opponent. They’re only covers within the division this season came against the Vikings. The same team the Packers just trounced last weekend. Green Bay looks like a viable threat in the upcoming playoffs. Detroit doesn’t; bet this Week 17 Sunday Nighter accordingly and look for it to be of the lower scoring variety.
