If the season hasn’t already gotten away from the Green Bay Packers, it’s on the verge of doing so. The look on Aaron Rodgers face whenever he or one of his teammates makes a mistake has been priceless for Chicago Bears fans across the country. This team is simply grasping at straws right now, and until the team gets healthy, it has no shot of turning it around.
Last Sunday night’s 42-24 defeat to the Redskins was one of many games the team could have won, but didn’t. Rodgers ended up throwing for 351 yards and three touchdowns, but he was let down by a crucial fumble and a defense that simply had no answer for Washington on the ground or on deep passing plays. Only five teams have conceded more points per game than the Packers, and that’s something that will have this team watching the playoffs from the sideline come January.
The Eagles have logged the second most penalties in the league. Not surprisingly, it was a penalty that cost them dearly in the second quarter of last week’s game against the Seahawks. What looked to be a game changing 57-yard touchdown strike from Carson Wentz to Zach Ertz was called back due to an illegal formation. Philly was forced to punt soon after, and Seattle went right down the field to build their lead to 13-7 and never look back.
It’s crazy how different the Eagles have been on the road and at home. At home, the team has been unbeatable with it a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS with wins over Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Atlanta. Three teams in the playoff hunt. On the road, the team has just one cover and has been beaten by an average of six points per game in the five defeats.
Packers LB Corps – Seriously, almost the entire starting linebacker corps, save for Clay Matthews is nicked up with an injury right now. Joe Thomas is the only 100 percent healthy body right now, and the injuries to this unit really showed last week with it unable to defend Jordan Reed or prevent Robert Kelley from getting past the second level with regularity.
Eagles RB Corps – Both Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles missed the second half of last week’s game with the Seahawks. The former sprained his MCL while the latter suffered a rib injury. This forced Doug Pedersen to go with rookie Wendell Smallwood way more than he liked. Philly needs one of these two guys to return to the lineup so the offense can take advantage of the Packers linebacker woes.
Packers vs. Eagles Free Picks
This is truly a tough call to make. Green Bay is scuffling big time, but any time you got Rodgers lining up for you under center, you have a chance. Philadelphia has been gangbusters at home but needs integral components of its offense to return healthy to have a chance. Still, desperation brings out the best in teams, and with the Eagles playing in their own backyard where they’ve won by an average of 17.5 points per game and covered the odds at BookMaker.eu with ease, I have no choice but to back the home team laying this short number.
Last we saw Philadelphia at home, the defense conceded just 15 points to the league’s No. 1 ranked scoring offense in the Atlanta Falcons. With no rushing offense to give him any kind of relief, look for Jim Schwartz’s defense to pin their ears back and get after Rodgers all game long. If Philly does end up coming out on top, it will be the defense that led the winning charge.
