Opening NFL Odds: Redskins -3, 40
Jets vs. Redskins TV Coverage: ESPN
The betting public was all over the New York Jets like white on rice in last week’s home tilt with Atlanta. The Falcons are a veteran ball club with a number of their position battles already determined. They had nothing to gain and everything to lose against a NY squad that still has much to be determined on both sides of the ball.
Unsurprisingly, the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets cruised to the 17-0 home win and cover behind sterling efforts from both backup quarterbacks. Teddy Bridgewater threw his hat in the ring to take home the honors by completing 7 of 8 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Sam Darnold looked poised and in control as well completing 13 of 18 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Whoever gets the pleasure of running up against Washington’s backups should go wild after allowing Brian Hoyer to rip them apart last week.
Can somebody tell Jay Gruden that even though it’s the preseason, you still have to play four quarters! Washington looked all but destined to topple the New England Patriots in Week 1 preseason betting at the half up 17-3. The team then went out and laid an egg over the game’s final 30 minutes getting shutout to ultimately fall by a 26-17 final count costing those NFL bettors that backed them both straight up and against the spread.
It was a surprising end result considering Gruden has actually taken the preseason seriously in going 11-5 straight up and 10-6 against the spread in his four previous seasons heading into the matchup. The team will now attempt to bounce back within the comforts of FedEx Field where it’s won and covered three of the last four times dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Players to Watch
The Redskins running game has pretty much been nonexistent for a number of years now. Unfortunately, the team will be without the services of running back Derrius Guice for the remainder of the season after the rookie tore his ACL last week against the Patriots. With Chris Thompson also dealing with a leg issue that could see him miss the beginning of the regular season, Washington will now be scrambling over the next three weeks in hopes of finding their bell cow back or at least a 1-2 punch that can help move the chains.
With that the case, look for Semaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs, Rob Kelley and a whole host of backs getting bigger looks in hopes of one of them stepping to the forefront to take the RB 1 gig by the horns and run with it.
Jets vs. Redskins Free Picks
One of my favorite angles to bet on in the preseason is against a team that lost integral parts to the team the previous week. Washington fits the bill with the loss of Guice and a backup tight end. The team normally comes out tight and plays it close to the vest the next week in hopes of staying healthy. Pair that with the Jets still looking to determine its roster makeup at multiple positions and it owning by far the better of the two QB rotations in this matchup, I’ll gladly take the points. It wouldn’t be a shock in the least if New York was favored by the time this one kicks off. Don’t sweat it, back Gang Green!
