Cincy proved it could win a shootout in Week 1 when it went point for point with the Bears and came out the victor. Lewis gave his first team offense some burn right out of the chute, and Andy Dalton more or less made the most of it. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns, but also had one picked off and returned 47 yards the other way for a score.
Joe Mixon struggled to get much going on the ground, but he did have a 24 yard touchdown on his only reception of the game. Matt Barkley was largely ineffective against his former teammates, but Jeff Driskel made a case for snagging the backup job by leading the Bengals to the go ahead score with just over two minutes remaining. The win moved Marvin Lewis to 31-31 SU and 31-30-1 ATS in the preseason.
The Cowboys first string offense and defense looked to have the riddle that is the 49ers solved right from the get go. Dak Prescott navigated the attack right down the field their opening drive of the game which was ended emphatically on the back of a 30 yard touchdown strike to rookie WR Michael Gallup.
Another rookie, Bo Scarborough formerly of the Alabama Crimson Tide, led Dallas on the ground with 33 yards and a score on nine carries with Ezekiel Elliott held out. Though the defense didn’t register any sacks, they brought consistent heat on all the opposing quarterbacks faced. Unfortunately, San Francisco proved to be deeper offensively allowing the Niners to pull out the comeback win late.
Player to Watch
Michael Gallup – With no dominating personality lining up in the Cowboys wide receiver corps, Gallup will have every opportunity to be that guy heading into the regular season. He proved just how explosive and talented he is with his lone reception coming of the big play variety for a touchdown. His odds to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award crashed back down to earth on that play alone falling from +15,000 to +5429, and he also shot up the board in mock fantasy football drafts. I made mention of buying some shares of him before the game took place last week, and I’m thrilled to have beaten the market to the punch. The 2x All-Mountain West performer could be just what Big D needs to turn the page on Dez Bryant.

Though Dallas got the job done last week against the NFL odds even though it choked the outright win away, I’m boarding the fade train once again in Week 2. Garrett owns a .467 winning percentage in the exhibition season and last week’s cover moved him to 11-19 against the spread. While Lewis leaves much to be desired as a preseason coach as well, his side looks to have the better overall depth. I’m not enamored with the stance in the least and wouldn’t be the least bit surprised with a Dallas win and cover, the position just comes off as the lesser of the two evils. The Cowboys third and fourth stringers looked really bad, so I’ll pay to see them see this one all the way through.
