Jets brass has looked Nostradamus-like after refusing to ink Ryan Fitzpatrick to a lucrative deal in the offseason after the veteran put forth one of the best seasons of his career in 2015-16. He threw 31 touchdown passes, and while the 15 interceptions were a bit unnerving, he still threw for 3905 yards. The “Fitzmagic” has dissipated quickly through the first month of this season with him already tossing 10 interceptions to just four touchdowns.
An injury to Eric Decker has only made his job that much harder even though his front wall is only allowing him to get sacked 1.5 times per game. The Jets offensive YPP average checks in at 18.3 (No. 25) which has boded terribly considering the defense doesn’t look to be anywhere near as good as it was a year ago with aging veteran Darrelle Revis losing a couple steps. Over the last two weeks, the Jets have been outscored 51-20 by Kansas City and Seattle.
If you had a Steelers ticket in your pocket on Sunday night, you had by far one of the easiest cashes that will likely go down all season. Pittsburgh wasted no time whatsoever getting ahead of the Chiefs, and then piled on to turn what many thought was a matchup of potential playoff entrants into a snooze fest that many likely turned off to catch up on shows on the DVR. I know I did.
The method to Mike Tomlin’s madness has been quite simple. Bombard opposing defenses both on the ground and through the air, and make it really hurt whenever the opposition turns the ball over. Pittsburgh ranks No. 10 in offensive yards per point, and while it’s giving up a hefty 394.8 yards per game defensively, the stop unit has not allowed the yardage to turn into points evidenced by their 19.7 defensive YPP average.
With Fitzpatrick routinely throwing interceptions, it comes as no surprise to see the Jets ranked dead last in the league in the turnover department. After throwing three more last week against the Seahawks, New York is now giving turning the ball over an average of 3.2 times per game.
That’s simply something this team can’t afford to do with the offense scoring just 19.8 points per game (No. 23) and the Steelers ready, willing and able to punch the ball into the end zone after forcing a turnover on the very next play. Winning or staying even in the turnover battle is something anyone looking to back NY in this contest must take into account and watch for throughout this game.
Jets vs. Steelers Free Picks
This is the largest lined pointspread in a Jets game this season and rightfully so. New York has looked terrible the last two weeks, and because of it, better than 90 percent of the betting public has flocked to the betting window to plop their money down on the Steelers odds at BookMaker.eu to cover this game. Why wasn’t this line opened at -9? I’m sure it wouldn’t have made much of a difference. It will likely still get there come kickoff.
Regardless, if ever there was a buy low sell high scenario, this is it. The only thing most bettors will remember is NY turning it over 11 times the last two weeks and also falling in Arrowhead to the same Chiefs team Pittsburgh just rolled up and smoked. That’s exactly the mentality sportsbooks want you to have heading into this one. The Jets have the front seven to get to Ben Roethlisberger as well as the run defense to shut Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams down. They’ll arrive in the Steel City ready for a fight.
