Where to begin with the New York Jets? The season started off alright with a tough 23-22 loss to the Bengals at home and an impressive 37-31 win in Buffalo. However, Cincinnati has looked terrible since so that close defeat doesn’t look nearly as good as it once did, and the Bills still racked up 307 passing yards and scored on a number of big plays.
Since then, the Jets have gone on to lose to the Chiefs, Seahawks and Steelers and failed to cover the closing number in all three contests. The one constant in all three defeats was turnovers and an inability to defend the pass. Heading into Week 6, NY owns a -10 turnover differential, the worst in the league, and a 13.6 defensive yard per point average (No. 25). The league’s No. 2 rush defense has meant absolutely nothing with all opposition bypassing the run to pick the defense’s bones through the air.
The Cardinals haven’t gotten out to nearly the start most expected at the outset of the season. I’m not going to rehash the first month of play. It was ugly. That’s all you need to know. However, Bruce Arians squad might just have secured the win that turns the season around after his club went into San Francisco, absorbed a couple of the Niners early punches, and returned home with the 33-21 win and cover in tow after exploding in the second half.
Most impressive in the win was the defenses ability to shut the 49ers passing attack down save for Jeremy Kerley whose eight receptions for 102 yards and a score was the only notable damage done. Granted, the Niners don’t possess the greatest of air attacks, but limiting it to a paltry 135 total yards was impressive to say the least. NY is averaging just 1.0 passing touchdown per game (No. 27), while the Cardinals have allowed just one passing touchdown per game (No. 8).
Player to Watch
The Jets defense has conceded at least one huge scoring strike through the air in four of its five played games. Big Ben hooked up with Sammie Coates for a 72 yard touchdown last week. Russell Wilson got them for a 42 yard touchdown pass the previous week. In Week 2, Tyrod Taylor connected on a pair of 70+ yard TD strikes. In the season opener, Dalton and Green hooked up for a 54 yard score.
See the ongoing theme? No, well let me connect the dots for you. The Jets are very beatable deep. That means John Brown is going to be the receiver NY must game plan to stop since he’s Palmer’s best deep threat. Devising a plan to stop him is one thing. Executing it is a different matter.
Jets vs. Cardinals Free Picks
It might be time to come to terms to the fact that the Jets just aren’t any good this season. These last three weeks have been very tough to watch, and it doesn’t look to be getting better any time soon. Even if Darrell Revis returns to the field, he’s a shell of his former self. Eric Decker would give the offense a boost, but do you really want to trust Ryan Fitzpatrick with your hard earned money? He managed to not throw an interception against the Steelers last week, but the two weeks prior combined to throw nine of them. Arizona has already reeled in seven interceptions, and will get pressure on him.
I’m surprised to see better than 71 percent of the tickets written thus far backing the Jets on the odds at Bookmaker.eu. Those bettors simply haven’t learned their lesson yet regardless of how schizophrenic Arizona’s overall play has been thus far. NY has failed to put a single point on the board in the second half two of the last three weeks, and it would have been three straight had it not returned a fumble for a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining.
