Absolutely nothing went right for the Jets last season who struggled their way to a 5-11 record and managed just six pointspread covers along the way. The offense put a grand total of 275 points on the scoreboard and ranked No. 26 in total offense with an average of 329.2 yards per game. The defense wasn’t nearly as bad as its No. 28 ranked scoring defense suggested. It had more to do with the offense simply being unable to possess the football or put points on the board.
With a career journeyman back-up leading the charge in Josh McCown, it doesn’t look to be getting better anytime soon. Especially with leading returning wide receiver Quincy Enunwa gone before the season even started. Bilal Powell will be looked upon as the unit’s saving grace, but he’s yet to show he can become a bell cow back that can carry an offense. The offense is going to get a lot worse before it gets better for this franchise.
The Bills were expected to turn into a defensive juggernaut under the watch of the Ryan brothers who were brought in a few years back. That plan went south in a hurry with the stop unit actually regressing from the output it put forth before the duo even arrived. Buffalo gave up an average of 357 yards ( No. 19 ) and 23.6 points per game ( No. 16 ) a season ago.
When they paired that with an offense that could basically only run the ball, the end results weren’t good evidenced by yet another sub .500 finish and placement in the bottom half of the AFC East standings. Tyrod Taylor has been battling a concussion throughout most of the preseason, and enters his third season calling the shots in Buffalo looking to take a step forward after regressing a bit a year ago.
The Jets hardly imposed their will on many teams last season, but for some reason, they were able to do exactly just that in both skirmishes with the Bills. In the teams Week 2 tilt, Matt Forte had his biggest game of the season rushing for 100 yards and three touchdowns en route to leading New York to the 37-31 road win and cover as 1-point underdogs. In the Week 17 rematch, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Powell shined combining for 322 of the Jets 329 total yards to lead the team to the 30-10 win and cover to sweep the season rivalry. In doing so, NY ended Buffalo’s recent dominance improving to 4-6 straight up and against the spread in the last 10 meetings.
Jets vs. Bills Picks
I’m not entirely sure McCown is an upgrade from Fitzpatrick. The tandem of Forte and Powell is solid, but there will be numerous times throughout the game that McCown will have to make a play with his arm and I just don’t trust him to do it. LeSean McCoy is still one of the premiere running backs in the league, and with New York hurting its run defense by recently shipping Sheldon Richardson to Seattle, I expect him to have a solid showing for his fantasy backers in Week 1. Laying this many points at one of the top-rated sportsbooks is certainly unattractive, but it’s the way to go in this tilt. The Jets could be historically bad this season!
