Houston Texans vs. Carolina Panthers
Date and Time: Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 7:30 p.m. ET
Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
Week 1 Preseason Opening NFL Odds: Panthers -3, O/U 36.5
Texans vs. Panthers TV Coverage: NFL Network
The Panthers are 3-point home favorites in this contest on Wednesday night. The Panthers are not expected to play Cam Newton long so it should be Derek Anderson getting a quarter or so and then the mess behind the top two in Joe Webb and Garrett Gilbert. The player to watch for Carolina is rookie Christian McCaffrey who is expected to have a big role in the offense this season. He probably won’t play long but he could easily make a big play while he is in the game.
The attention for Houston will be on Savage and Watson and their battle for the starting quarterback job. Savage heads into the first preseason game with the starting job but the competition is not over. Savage has already drawn some high praise from star receiver DeAndre Hopkins but Watson can still make an impact if he has a good NFL preseason.
Player to Watch
If the Texans are going to cover this game then they need Deshaun Watson to play well. Savage will probably get 1.5 quarters and Watson will probably get 1.5 quarters. If Watson plays well then Houston has a good chance to win this game outright, as Carolina probably won’t play their top two quarterbacks, Newton and Anderson more than a few series each. That mean it is Watson vs. Webb and Gilbert. The third string quarterback for Houston is Brandon Weeden and while he is not a good quarterback, at least he does have some experience.
Texans vs. Panthers Free Picks
I don’t know why the Panthers are laying points in this game, as it looks like more of a pick to me. I would not be surprised if the Texans get some play at top-rated sportsbooks leading up to kickoff. I will take the points at BetDSI on Wednesday night.
