Fans of the GMEN were cursing upper management’s decision to axe Tom Coughlin and hire then offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo as head coach five weeks into the season. But since dropping a 23-16 decision to the Packers in Week 5, New York hasn’t lost. On top of that, it hooked its wagering supporters up by covering the closing pointspread five times on their current win streak.
That said, the opposition faced hasn’t been the stiffest so it’s still very much so unknown of the Giants are actually a Super Bowl contender or just a team that’s taken advantage of a weak schedule. Either way, there are some real positives to take away from the team’s overall body of work. The defense is allowing under 20 points per game and has been tough to run on. Offensively, the passing game has thrived with Eli Manning throwing for an average of 256.5 yards per game.
Pittsburgh looked to be the team to beat in the AFC through the first five weeks of the season with it going 4-1 straight up and against the spread and tallying wins against Washington, Cincinnati, Kansas City and the Jets. Unfortunately, Ben Roethlisberger once again succumbed to injury and the team dropped four straight both outright and against the pointspread.
Big Ben has been back under center full time for four games now, and though they’ve split them, they enter this crucial tilt winners of two straight both straight up and against the spread against the Browns and Colts. Questionable opposition for sure, especially when considering Andrew Luck sat last week’s game out, but both Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell shined in those game. With Pittsburgh’s defense down a couple notches, it’s pertinent those two show up every week. Right now, so far so good.
Matchup to Watch
The Giants have been able to mask their poor pass defense over their win streak due to not running up against any potent passing attacks. That won’t be the case on Sunday with the Steelers owners of the No. 8 ranked passing offense that averages a shade under 264 yards per game. Whether it be Brown catching them deep, or Bell turning dump-offs into 30-yard gains, NY will have its hands full in this one.
For the Giants to stick around in this one, their ground game must excel. Pittsburgh’s defense is best at stopping the run with it allowing 95.3 yards per game (No. 9), but Rashad Jennings is currently in his best form of the season having gone for 80+ yards in two of his last three games. Him and Paul Perkins must make hay on the ground so as to allow for the defense to stay as fresh as possible.
Giants vs. Steelers Free Picks
It’s been all fun and games for the GMEN over the last six weeks, but they’re about to get a rude awakening on Sunday. Pittsburgh is slowly but surely rounding into the form that saw it get out to such a hot start against the on the NFL odds at BookMaker.eu. One of the main reasons is health, and that doesn’t bode well for the visitors.
New York’s offense has not been good which comes as a surprise with one of the best wide receivers in the league at Eli Manning’s disposal. Still, the unit failed to surpass 300 combined yards against arguably the worst defense in the league last week, and I simply don’t foresee the switch all of a sudden being flipped against a Steelers team fighting for its playoff lives. Pittsburgh’s allowed a total of 16 points the last two weeks and averaged 27.3 the last three weeks. This is a statement game for the home team while NY has a much bigger game on deck back at home against Dallas. Lay the chalk!
