Last week’s effort in Washington was surprising to say the least. Why NY felt the need to compete till the bitter end and risk injury with nothing to gain still boggles the mind. That said, they got away with it. No major injuries were incurred and they got to slam the second season door on a division rival. While it was no doubt a confidence building win, NY didn’t fare too well against +.500 opponents in the regular season and already lost by a touchdown on this field back in Week 5.
NY has gotten to this point on the back of a defense that allowed under 340 total yards per game (No. 10) and just 17.8 points per game. That scoring average checks in as the league’s No. 2 ranked unit, but it will have its hands full against a Packers offense firing on all cylinders that’s tallied at least 30 points in each of its last four games.
After getting trounced by the Redskins on Sunday Night Football to log their fourth straight loss and fifth in their last six tries, many counted Green Bay out of it and had already anointed the Lions NFC North champs. But ever since following that win up with a solid showing on Monday Night Football against the Eagles, the Packers haven’t been slowed or stopped.
Aaron Rodgers is playing out of his mind right now. Over the course of Green Bay’s six game win streak, he’s thrown for 1,685 yards and amassed an insane 15:0 TD/INT ratio. The ankle injury that dramatically hampered his play seems to have healed with him routinely picking up crucial third down conversions with his legs and scrambling around to keep plays long enough to find open receivers down field. NY’s weak link defensively is its pass defense. Rodgers is locked in and is likely to take advantage.
The first meeting between these clubs was un ugly affair won by the Packers 23-16. They pushed on the 7 point spread and the combined 39 points fell way short of the 49.5 point total.
Eli Manning was limited to less than 200 passing yards and only threw one touchdown. NY managed just 43 total rushing yards, but didn’t have the services of Rashad Jennings who is now healthy. Rodgers had a day to forget as well. While he threw for 259 yards and a couple touchdowns, he was also picked off twice. Instead, Green Bay dominated on the ground enough to hold possession of the pigskin for better than 14 minutes.

The Packers are a different team right now than the one that got the best of New York in the first go round. That’s what makes this game so scary for the Giants who have had all kinds of issues putting points on the board all season long. Do they have enough offensive firepower to challenge the Packers on the scoreboard? I believe they do and I also believe it shows up in this one enough to see this one turn into a back and forth affair.
It’s going to be a cold, clear day in Green Bay on Sunday with limited wind to effect either passing game. McAdoo has played ball control a ton lately. I expect him to try to do so once again, but once Green Bay puts some distance between it and the Giants on the scoreboard, he’ll be forced to go to the air. That’s a good thing considering the Packers pass defense checks in as the second worst in the league. Each of these team’s last two playoff battles combined to go over the total per the closing total odds at BookMaker.eu, and I fully expect to see both offenses put on a show in what could turn out to be a “the team with the ball last wins the game” scenario.
