With one month of play in the books, it’s safe to say that the changes made to the coaching staff this past offseason are yet to make much of a difference. The Giants continue to kill themselves with awful turnovers, and Ben McAdoo seems to suffer from the same disease Tom Coughlin did that prevents them from utilizing sound game clock management.
Seriously, with a wide receiver corps that boasts names like Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and standout rookie Sterling Shepard, how have the Giants only managed to put an average of 18.2 points per game on the board? They’re moving the ball at will between the 20s in racking up better than 380 yards per game (No. 6), but they’re only scoring touchdowns on 46.2 percent of their red zone tries (No. 28). That must improve if this team is to be a player in the NFC East.
Last we saw the Packers, they stormed out to a 31-3 first half lead over the Lions and then put it into cruise control to hold on for the 34-27 win and cover. Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdowns in that game, and with the way the Giants had trouble limiting the Vikings second rate passing attack, he’s likely in line for another solid showing this evening.
This is the second of four straight home games for the Packers who get the Cowboys and Bears in the following weeks. The Vikings will be on bye next week, so if they hope to pull even in the standings, this is a must-have win for them against an opponent that still doesn’t look to have found themselves through the first month of play.
Rashad Jennings – Save for a 67 yard scamper on a dump-off pass secured by rookie Paul Perkins, the Giants ground game was nonexistent against the Vikings with Jennings riding the pine. While the Packers own the best run D in the league (42.7 YPG), NY must get some breathing room for Eli Manning so he can attempt to take advantage of Green Bay’s porous secondary. He’s listed as day-to-day after sitting out last week.
Sam Shields – One of the reasons the Packers secondary has been so beatable is because Shields has missed the last two games due to a concussion. In those games, the defense allowed a combined 671 yards and five touchdowns to Sam Bradford and Matthew Stafford. Manning could be in line for his best showing of the season if GBY’s best cover corner remains sidelined.
Giants vs. Packers Free Picks
If ever there was a buy low sell high spot with the Giants, this is it. The team looked awful last Monday night and that will be fresh on the minds of the betting public with it once again in a nationally televised spot. I’d love to recommend a play on the Giants plus a heaping load of points, but I think we’re better off expecting both of these teams to combine for a high scorer on the odds at BookMaker.eu instead.
Should Jennings return to the Giants lineup and Shields remain out, it only adds more fuel to the fire of taking this position. Be sure to watch the injury reports leading up to kickoff. The Giants have cashed over tickets eight of the last 11 times they retook the field off a Monday nighter, and enter this spot embarrassed.
