Falcons vs. Seahawks ATS Picks

NFL Week 6 Picks

A pair of first place teams are set to square off in one of the more intriguing matchups of the afternoon slate when the high-flying Atlanta Falcons get set to play in front of the 12th Man against the Seattle Seahawks. Before the season started, this game would have never been circled as one that could decide playoff alignment in the NFC, but that’s exactly the case as we head into Week 6 of the 2016-17 season.

Let’s go back in time and take a look at what the Falcons did at the start of last season. They pulled out hard fought wins against the Eagles and Giants, and then woodshedded the Cowboys in their own house in Week 3. After that, they simply destroyed Houston and then pulled out an exciting overtime win against Washington. Dan Quinn had the city of Atlanta up in arms and dreaming of a return visit to the Super Bowl.

It was all downhill from there unfortunately, as the team went on to drop seven of its next eight games and never even sniffed the playoffs. Is this year’s team going to suffer the same fate? I don’t think so. None of the Falcons first three opponents qualified for the playoffs last season. This year however, they’ve already logged road wins against the Raiders and Broncos who just so happen to sit tied atop the AFC West standings at 4-1. Though the defense does leave much desired, in this day and age of the NFL, it’s all about the offenses and the Falcons just so happen to possess the league’s No. 1 unit in most pertinent categories.

In combining for just 15 points through the first two weeks and Russell Wilson succumbing to a number of injuries, folks in Seattle had trouble falling asleep at night as they worried about the future of their ball club. Those sleepless nights quickly turned to deep REM sleep after the Seahawks toyed with the division rival 49ers and then took it to the New York Jets on the road. Wilson looked unimpeded in the win against the Jets throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns.

He will have had an extra week to get his body ready for this one. After Atlanta inexplicably came up with six sacks in Denver, two more than it had tallied all season, it’s possible he’ll need his ankle to be 100 percent so as to navigate himself out of trouble due to the Seahawks still possessing one of the worst pass protecting offensive lines in the league.

Key Stat

The Falcons have won the time of possession battle in only two games played to date. The opener against the Bucs in which they lost 31-24 as 2.5 point home favorites, and against the Panthers whom they tried desperately to milk the clock against in the second half due to holding a gargantuan lead.

In competitive games, Atlanta does not want to win the time of possession battle. The offense is cut from the quick strike cloth. If it’s losing that battle more times than not, it’s likely winning the game. At least that’s been the story this season. We’re truly yet to see the Falcons be forced to take their time, but that could end up being the case in this one with Seattle possessing the most complete defense it will have run up against to date.

These next two weeks will paint a much better picture of what kind of team the Seahawks truly are. Games against the Dolphins, Rams, 49ers and woeful Jets have done nothing to solidify them as one of the NFC’s contenders in my opinion. In running up against Denver and Oakland, Atlanta has taken on the much tougher overall schedule.

This however sets up to being one of the toughest spots on their entire schedule. A week removed from playing in the thin air of Mile High and beating the Broncos outright on the odds at, Julio Jones and his mates now have to deal with the Seahawks in front of the 12th Man. That’s simply some horrendous scheduling, and I don’t foresee them being able to get the best of it. Seattle had won and covered its previous two games coming out of the bye before last season. After falling to Arizona last season, I can’t help but think Pete Carroll and his staff have their men ready to put their best foot forward in this one.
