Eagles vs. Patriots Preseason Week 2 Betting Picks

Bet On NFL Preseason Week 2

The Philadelphia Eagles were thrashed 31-14 in their preseason home opener last week as 3 point favorites against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The New England Patriots outscored the Redskins 23-0 in the second half to pull out the come-from-behind 26-17 win and cover as 2.5 point favorites. With that the case, we should look to lay the field goal with the home team on the Week 2 preseason betting lines in this Super Bowl LII rematch. Right…wrong!

With both Carson Wentz and Nick Foles out of commission, it was the Nate Sudfeld and Joe Callahan show against Pittsburgh. Puke! The former went on to complete 10 of his 14 passes for 140 yards and a couple scores, but also threw a pair of interceptions. The latter completed 8 of 18 passes for 91 total yards.

When it was said and done, Philadelphia racked up 106 yards on the ground and 219 through the air for a grand total of 325 yards. Not bad. However, the defense, which played with a number of backups, allowed the Steelers to gouge them for 346 total yards. On the bright side, the unit registered four quarterback sacks and picked off one pass. That was however alleviated by three Philadelphia miscues.

If not for a Stephen Gostkowski 52 yard field goal make with a few ticks left on the clock in the second quarter, New England would’ve been shutout through the first 30 minutes of their exhibition opener with the Redskins. Down 17-3 at the break, the Pats showed why their perennial Super Bowl contenders by going on to outscore Washington 23-0 in the second half to pull out the 26-17 win and cover as 2.5 point favorites per the closing preseason NFL betting odds.

Led by veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, the Pats went on the comeback trail. When the former Michigan State Spartans night was done, he ended up throwing for 144 yards and completed 16 of 23 passes. He’s likely to get a bulk of the playing time in this game as well with Tom Brady to see little if any action while nursing a mild back injury.

Player to Watch

Dallas Goedert – With Zach Ertz struggling to stay on the practice field, a window has opened up for the rookie tight end to make an impression throughout the preseason. The rookie out of South Dakota State might be a rival with Carson Wentz who went to North Dakota State, but the two could make sweet music playing with one another moving forward. He shined in the opener hauling in four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Ertz has been injury prone over the course of his Five year NFL career, so the more this kid exhibits what it takes to succeed as a tight end at the professional level, the better off he’ll be if called upon when it matters most. Look for Philly’s coaching staff to give him some major burn in this one as well as the next three weeks.

I faded the Pats at home last week against the Redskins. The investment looked great through a quarter of play. Then the second half played out. Gross! I’ll play with fire once again this week and back the Eagles plus the points on the preseason NFL odds. With last week’s comeback win, Bill Belichick’s just 44-43-6 against the spread as a head coach in the preseason. On the flipside, Doug Pederson was 6-2 and 5-3 against the spread before incurring last week’s loss. I expect Nick Foles to take some reps this week, and the Eagles defense should show much better after putting forth an egg last week. Gimme the points!
