Eagles vs. Panthers TV Coverage: CBS
The Eagles opened the season as +3623 choices to win Super Bowl LII and +325 choices to win the NFC East. Before taking Arizona out behind the woodshed and serving up a proverbial beating last Sunday, Doug Pederson’s squad checked in at +1850 to win the big game and the -129 odds on favorites to win the division. After moving to 4-1 straight up and against the spread, those offerings are sure to get shorter once rereleased.
While the defense rose to the occasion versus Arizona by holding the Cardinals to just seven points, it’s the offense that’s set the tone through the first five weeks. Entering Week 6, Philly ranks No. 3 in total yards ( 397.8 YPG ) and No. 7 in scoring offense ( 27.4 PPG ). The unit runs a balanced attack that ranks top 10 in both passing and rushing yardage. Picking the offense up when it fails to put the pigskin is the end zone is rookie kicker Jake Elliott who stands 10 of 12 with a long of 61. He’s also nailed all 11 of his extra point attempts.
Much has changed since Bank of America Stadium got to see their beloved Panthers in live action. The last time they did, they saw their squad on the wrong end of a 34-13 beat down at the hands of the division rival Saints. Since then, Riverboat Ron’s squad has gone on the road to both New England and Detroit and come out victorious. In doing so, Carolina now finds itself atop the division standings and in the good graces of bettor’s due to covering four of their first five games.
The dramatic turnaround has everything to do with Cam Newton once again looking like the former Heisman Trophy and MVP Award winner. After averaging just 188.7 passing yards in his first three games, the former Auburn Tiger has gone for 300-plus passing yards to go along with a stellar 6:1 TD/INT ratio over the last two weeks. As Cam goes, so too does the offense. The proof is in the pudding with it logging its two highest scoring weeks of the season entering this Week 6 kick-off.
Matchup to Watch
The Eagles do a fantastic job shutting opposing ground games down to an average of just 62.8 yards per game ( No. 2 ), but it’s had all sorts of trouble limiting opponents passing attacks. Even after holding Carson Palmer to a 28 of 44 showing for 291 yards and one touchdown, Philly still checks in ranked No. 29 against the pass in allowing an average of 283.2 yards per game at 7.5 yards per pass attempt ( No. 26 ). As already stated, Carolina’s passing game has really picked it up over the last two weeks. With that, Philadelphia either will or won’t be able to compete in this game depending on how the secondary takes care of business defending the likes of Kelvin Benjamin, Devin Funchess and all the other pass catchers.
Eagles vs. Panthers Picks
I’ll admit. I didn’t believe the Panthers had it in them to go on the road in back-to-back weeks and pull off outright upsets. Hats off to Rivera and his staff along with Cam for getting the job done. The accolades stop there however. I had the Eagles pegged as a team to make some noise this season, and so far, they’re making me look like a genius. Along with padding my roll at the top 5 online sportsbooks. Carolina has been shredded by the pair of capable passing quarterbacks it’s opposed this season, which leads me to believe Wentz is in line for another fine showing in all player prop categories. Philadelphia just seems to have the “it” factor, and I’m buying in 100 percent!
